Fatboy SL Wheelset vs. Handbuilt set

I am building a winter bike 907 190mm frame. I went to get my LBS price on Mulefut and hope hubs build and he suggested just buying the Spesh wheelset instead. I can get it for about $230 less plus tax compared to the mulefut build from another store. Is the spesh wheelset decent? How are the hubs in comparison to fatsno? I also need to price Robson build with hopes to compare the three, but if spesh was substantially cheaper than the rest would you guys do it? I'm trying to build on the cheap btw, this is my winter/crap weather bike, I'm not trying to win any show n shines or anything with it.

mulefoot and hope ain't really going cheap. it's all relative i guess. heard of issues with specialized rear hubs. bad issues. maybe they fixed the problem.

All I can add is that I've built quite a few sets of fat wheels with Hopes and they're nice.. My friend has Fatsnos on his 907 and they have been absolutely trouble free.
Mikesee was praising the Mulefut in a different thread.
Build em with Supercomps and you'll have a truly nice set of wheels.

What is the cheapest wheelset out there that isn't going to size up after a season in the snow?

The 907 hubs are probably 50 bucks cheaper than the Hopes and are very good. I have em on my 907. I'm a 250 pound Clyde and I have not hurt em yet. I rode my bike in snow, on the beach and I've been riding it on rooty singletrack all year.
I believe they're made by Chosen and I also believe they're the same as Stan's hubs.

I swapped the wheels on my fatboy to mulefut/hope. I did this primarily because I wanted to run tubeless and didn't trust the hookless specialized rims.

if you're doing a build on the cheap, then handbuilt won't be close to competitive.

But if you want quality above all else, then handbuilt is the way to go.

I am stoked for my Fatsno/Nextie build. It'll be my 2nd handbuilt wheelset.

My first was for my commuter a few years back, and I set that one up to be primarily a strong, durable wheelset. I made a few parts choices to limit the cost where I could, but it was still a few hundred for that wheel build. And they've been absolutely solid.

On this build, the only cost consideration I made was choosing Nextie rims over Whisky No 9 rims to save a bit. I could have gone cheaper, but I would have been more suspect of the rim quality. It's costing me, though.

Well I'm assuming my lbs can beat the other price on the hope mulefut combo which was 829 from the other guy. My lbs quoted 600 plus tax for spesh fatboy sl set, so if the hope and mulefut combo is only a hundred bucks more, it'll be a no brain er.

If Spesh is charging 600 for a wheelset, that has got to be one budget hubset
