    Is it better to make your own studded tires?

    Is premaded studded tires more reliable than homemade version?

    I'm happy with my sheet metal screws, but I don't ride a bunch of pavement.

    If you use a product like Kold Kutters and do it right it will make any tire far superior on ice than any manufacturer studded tires.

    I like those in the front.
    In the rear, I found the extra weight on the tire tread ended up pulling them out.

    Factory studded will be lighter, easier, and likely the most reliable for tubeless setup. Way more $$$.

    Diy can mean lath screws, grip studs, or kold kutters.

    I think the win for me is 1/2" kold kutters with nylon nuts. Cheap, great grip, won't pull out, and can run tubeless.

    But if you don't mind the spend, go factory. Just for ease and reliability.

    all depends on the riding you have and conditions you deal with. I've found that a combination of KKs and carbide work the best. Or if you have tires that can't take the carbide. Angling the KK still works and gives amazing traction.

    Right now we have hard pack trails with a couple inches of snow. When you hit the lake it's like greased lightning. KKs and maybe Grip studs are the only thing to use right now. Unless your going screws.

    Agreed if... you have the right tire tread that will keep the screws in.

    It also depends on the type of icy riding the OP's doing, right? For glare ice and wanting to ride fat regardless, Kold Kutters get my vote. However, for mixed ice and snow I can go for factory studded.

    Recently I've taken a Vee Snowshoe and added in some Kold Kutters on the rear tire for additional traction as we'd had a lot of crap ice up here recently and adding those 20 or so KKs made a huge difference.

    Sheet metal screws work in a pinch but I've found them to work really well in the short term then quickly dull out to where they don't provide enough bite.
