The bike so ugly, you just had to own it, Growler Bikes content

Thought I'd share a new build I have going on, in conjunction with the awesome dudes at Growler Bikes.

No secret that as neighbors in the region, we've partnered up with me building their wheels for a year or two, and I've sold a bike or two of theirs as well, but this is our first all in, crazy ass custom project together, which as fans of the brand know, is where they really start to shine heads and tails above the other big boys.

It all started over beers, (what doesn't?).

A good riding pal has been kicking tires for about two years. Came in and saw a large size Mr. Big Stuff a week or two ago.

You need to understand, he's the sort of guy that really digs getting one over on friends (in a good natured, fun way) and just loves a good practical joke. Case in point, he hung a dismembered, bloody, rubber Halloween head from a tree on one of our favorite rides, and never told anyone. Scared the daylights out of the first guy through, and I can't vouch for the cleanliness of his drawers after that either....

So it went down like this.

He says to me "man, if this was a medium, I'd buy it".

What color would you like, as I can get one in, any color you like, I replied.

    "Oh, color doesn't matter".

You sure? So if I got polka dots and zebra stripes, you'd still be in?

    "Yep".

So, really? Any color or colors at all?

    "Yep".

    Okay, game on buddy.

Since Willo does his own powder work, and just saw a technique he'd been itching to try, lotsa colors, all splashed around in this crazy way, he was all in, once I explained the idea to him.

Every part has been assiduously selected to NOT match any other color on the build. Graphics, still in process, we hope to have each letter be a different color, but that's tricky, so it may not happen.

More to follow, but enjoy the process, which is starting now.

Comments tend to include vomit, but it's hotly debated whether it's Easter that got sick, or a drunken unicorn. Either way, bwuhahahahahahhahahahaaaa!

Buddy of mine said it's only slightly more outrageous than a typical Klein from BITD, a point which I cannot argue.

    Awesome!

If you were a *real* friend you'd piss on it it after the build was complete, and *just* before delivery...

    Any reflective/glow-in-the-dark colors?

In a strange way...kinda draws one in.

Edit: Berd spokes might look right at home.

I actually really like it. Not as a whole, but I would rock that frame with normal black rims (just rims, keep many colors) or those rims on a grey, blue, or black frame. Keep the posts coming! Can't wait

I think it's great! Certainly nothing else like it out there. I'm excited to see it built up.

Growler makes nice bikes, and the fact it's run by nice people make them even better.

Well Mike, it sounds like you know our group a bit too well.

When things break out on the trail, pissing on it is almost always suggestion #1.

New bikes, *have been known* to get blessed prior to pick up by body parts being draped over top tubes, with images texted. Not me mind you (I have .5% too much couth to ever do such a thing personally), drunken idiot friends of the new bikes owner....

Interesting suggestion on the Berd's, thanks!

That bike is asking for some of the colored On One Floaters - maybe and Orange up front, pink in back. Oh, and glittery rainbow rim liners for the cuttouts. And a Barney the dinosaur handlebar horn.
I would advise not taking my advice.

I agree about the Floaters, possibly a pink and green combo, but good luck finding them. I purchased a pair of whites a couple yrs ago and On One has since ceased the fat stuff. I liked the tire, but so did the person who bought the bike they were on. I'd absolutely buy them again at that price point.

Told my buddy his bike was done, and sent him this.

Sent it to a few pals in the know, too. They suggested white or colored tires, but yeah, scarcity, and he does want tires that actually work well and don;t suck in our varied, 4 season conditions around here, so, yeah, black they will be....

As someone who appreciates Darios work in a very deep way, that's quite the comment, even though I have nothing to do with the art!

Oh, he will walk out with it.

He's getting bombarded on all sides, even showed his girlfriend the video I have, on Saturday.

Basically, everyone in circle has seen it and is under informational embargo.

He's gotten basically everyone he knows in some form or another over the years, so they are all having a blast torturing him.....

Well, it does work, sometimes. Out on a cold winter ride and a friend's rear derailleur wouldn't work after going thru one too many stream crossings. Another friend says "just piss on it!" and proceeds to do so (group laughing). Friend #1 takes his bike to a mechanic friend a few days later and asks him to tune it up. After working on it, mechanic friend says "your bike smells like piss". Friend #1 says "oh yeah, XXXXX pissed on it to free up the derailleur". The mechanic was not so pleased about this.

Definitely better than a Klein, just because of the tongue-in-cheek factor. Still, if you'd done this to MY bike, I'd rattle-can it with flat black paint, intentionally holding the can too far away so that it was prone to flaking off easily. That way, every scratch and chip would add to its character and beauty kind of like a rainbow scratch pad from childhood:

That black paint idea is awesome! But not for this one I'm afraid...

As for pissing on it? Yep, frozen pawls in a freehub have been brought back a few times with mother natures warming fluid.

Frozen derailluer too, but sadly, enough to get into another gear that was better, before it set back up.

Ditto for the freehub, "don't coast at all!!!" is the mantra once you're no longer just spinning the cranks and going nowhere....

Mike, we really need to hang out sometime, ^birds of a feather I tell you^....

Wheels are built and freaking glorious. Pics tomorrow, too late for good light today.

Went with orange strips, a tad boring perhaps, but it really kinda works, tying all those insane pastels together, but pics will bear out whether I'm deluding myself or not!

    Yeah, I know.

But the tires aren't the same brand, nor are rotors style, size, or manufacturer, so that's gotta count for something??

Oh, spokes and nips are different colors side to side, and sides which have them are opposite front and rear....

Not sure I get the value in that move? I mean, sure, not the right spot, but, otherwise, am I missing something?

Big reveal party is Saturday unless the stuff from Race Face gets tied up at the border.

They were all in, loved the idea. Even went so far as to swap some stuff out on certain things so the multi color game would be stronger, so kudos to Race Face too!

see, the orange rim strips actually match. I thought the goal was to NOT match?

I think bold colors would have better accomplished the anti-matching of the pastels.

A fire engine red, or navy blue, or something like that.

So far, this bike is looking far too put-together than I expected based on the explanation in the OP.

    Give me time.

It's a balance between *subtle* tying together, which utter departures in colors.

18 bosses on the frame, 5 different bolt colors for them, etc etc etc.

Man, some of you guys ought to take up a career in art critique!

    wow!

Only thought on rim strips is one could be lime green. But,

the colour on the rims looked unbalanced in the rims only photos, so I was wait-and-see. But now it's such a complete riot of colour, I can't look at just one colour, as it blends into such a huge riot of colour that keeps my eyes moving around so much I can't see any detail. And the saturation of that colour in powder coat - wow!

    Just imagine.
    Who robbed the bank?
The guy on the coloured bike.
O.K., but what did he look like?
We don't know, we just saw the bike...
O.K., what colour was the bike?
    Lots of colours.
    Which colours?
    Just lots of them.

So for 'matching' orange rim strips: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

And the black rubber provides an excellent contrast to show off all the colours. I think the colours would look less with coloured rubber.

Even the hubs are a subtle yet meaningful difference. I believe that works better than if one was red and one green, etc..

I can't imagine how that could be better.

You even have a single layer metal swirly thingy on one wheel and multi-layered multi-sized metal circle thingys on the other wheel.

The kilt is a fantastic idea!

So, slight snags prevent completion today. But it's darn close, so here ya go.

Bars aren't right, and plainly missing cranks and chain, otherwise, it's a thing to behold!

Willo and I are here to help, should you have an itch that needs scratching...

Glad you like it, it's probably the most fun project I've had in a few years. And it's not even over, we still get to wheel it out for it's owner tomorrow, and he has absolutely NO idea what this thing is going to look like.

Pastel dumpster fire, I love it.

This style/scheme, whatever you wanna call it now has an official name.

    Ashamed? Heck no.

He's over 60, loves the sh*t out of riding and being alive. He stopped worrying about what other people might think, a long, long time ago.

He's going to revel in the envy is what he's going to do!

That, and have a loaner bike for visiting friends that will make them wince.

Eh, in person I think it's better.

All the really loud saddles are some version of pleather, and I really prefer hide on mine and my customers heinies!

It's oil tanned, and has a lot of character up close. Also jarringly NOT like any of the screaming colors from the pastel dumpster fire going on below, it sits on hold, serene, awaiting it's masters, well, um, yeah.....

Now now, let's not judge. Every once in a while it's OK to sacrifice good judgement and reliability in the name of fashion.

Breaking the norm is no stranger to Craig. He's similar to a stereotypical SSer, he just doesn't happen to ride a SS.

(By stereotypical SSer I mean clean cut, intelligent, articulate, and classy. Also generally extremely flexible and willing to compromise. )

Maybe not exactly. But his knowledge and passion for bikes reeks of good taste. I've seen his collection many times and every time I go in the shop I discover a new treasure of which there are many.

I know there were many minds involved in the exact execution of this bike, and now that I know who it's for I dig it even more. Nice work MCS. I vividly remember the last build for Lou. I do say you've outdone yourself once again. Can't wait till I see it on the trail with you guys!!!

Aw shucks that's a lot of nice things to say, thanks.

He's picking it up this afternoon.

Reveal party is at 4 if you're of a mind.

It's funny Mike, and I say this as someone who's been tripped up by their own desire to get one over on a long respected (by me) member of a group when it *appears* that they've gone and stepped in their own pile of crap, and you jump in, only to realize too late, that there was an option you missed in your zeal...

Are silver, and black, not two DIFFERENT colors? And are those colors not offered in brass?

Silver spokes get black brass and black spokes get silver brass. Rear wheel is silver spoked on disc side black on drive, front is the opposite.

So there, and alloy nips still suck in the wet nasty world we ride in!!!

Oh, and I'm more of a which royal got herself knocked up this week kinda guy, not a fake baked big booty in LA sorta dude....

OMG. I was totally kidding as if that saddle legitimately could mute that bike's paint. You couldn't put that thing out with a fire extinguisher.

On a side note, I ride a brown saddle and really wish more retailers would use brown/natural colors. IMHO - so much nicer.

    Nice project- deserves the attention.

    My work here is done.

All built now, just a hair under 30 lbs, which kinda surprises me, was expecting less.

For the art critics, the bars and seat post are carbon (for weight reduction) and their graphic do not match color wise, so it fits the bill in my little crazy world.

Cranks don't come in colors in carbon, but have a subtle purple graphic. Do not the flip flopped color accents on the cranks and pedals though.

Thanks Mike, I knew that was in fun, no worries!

Lou is super stoked, but he's missing tonights ride for a family dinner. That's more coping skill than I possess, let me tell you!!

You mean tire labels? If so, but of course! Not doing so would be downright unprofessional!

So, its been a year and a half since this amazing monstrosity has been unleashed upon us. What does it look like covered in scratches and marks from being ridden? Come on! The people need to know!

I'll see if I can snag a few shots of it in the wild, but if it helps, know that it's had the snot ridden out of it, is olding up great, is loved to death, and is never, EVER, clean.

I figured this thread was resurrected for the sole purpose of stating "not as ugly as the new Salsa fatbikes."
I would advise not taking my advice.

At first glance I thought it was one of the 2020 Salsa colourways.

As promised. It was feeling a little dejected because it's owner chose to take his ICT instead of it last night, but the pics tell a tale of life filled with mud, roots, rocks, and fun, all the same....
