    Ain't that always the way...

I was wrapping up the build on my son's medium 907. Plan was to complete the build on Sunday morning when we returned from Boy Scout camping.
Saturday night, while walking to the cabin, I was asked by another dad if I had jumper cables. I did. We went to go get them and start his car so he could leave when I suddenly slipped on ice and broke my ankle.
So now, no fatbikes on the beach for at least six weeks and worse even, No bikes when I go on vacation to Florida the first two weeks in April.
While I was home today, the mail man came and dropped off my son's Wolftooth bash guard and bolts. I was so excited to have that I went to the LBS and got the 26 tooth NW 64 bcd chainring we ordered last week. It's killing us not to be able to finish and ride.
I also built the wheels the other night. Gold ano Marge Lites... Salsa 190mm hub on the back, BHS 135 up front. Nice hub.
I'll try and post pics from my Blackberry while I'm laid up.
I can't do it from home on my wife's computer. All my photo files are at work.

    Nooooooooooo.

Ugh, sorry to hear it man. Sounds like you've got as good of an attitude as any. You gotta laugh and make the best of it.

Sorry do hear that....go figure you were doing a good deed and got hurt.

I would have still hooked up the jumper cables to my battery, but instead of connecting them to the other battery, the other dads nipples.

Haha! That's funny. I can't even be angry with him. He's a truly nice guy. Had to leave because he had to work early on Sunday morning.

Take off the pedal on that side. Wear clipless on the other foot. Work on pedaling the full revolution, it's only beach riding.

    Suck it up!

Man, that's too bad. I've got that secret trail dialed in.
Worked at Trek/Fisher dealer 2008-2013. Only a little biased.

Oh man... Well, I'm going to an ankle specialist tomorrow. Based on the outcome of the visit, we may reschedule and go down at a later date. Thanks for remembering me.

Been there done that. Broke up a fight to save someone from hurting another....some one pushed/fell on me and broke my leg.
Lost a whole winter bike season. Got on the trainer in the man-room as soon as the doc said it was safe. Still had the "boot" on.
    Good luck with the recovery.

I've spent more time broken and unable to ride, than healthy, for the last 3 years. You have my sympathy because I know first hand it sucks the big one. I am currently unable to ride, and to make matters worse I have a new Echo with Hed's screaming my name, and all I can do is admire it. I am still a ways off yet, so I know your pain. Hope you heal soon.

I understand. I crashed back in November, busted a rib and collarbone (surgery and a plate needed). Do what the doctor says and work real hard when you get to PT. My doctor and therapist really knew what they were doing (sports medicine types). I did what they told me to do and I am doing pretty good overall.

Hang in there and live vicariously through this board and your son's riding. Also, thank you for helping out with Boy Scouts!

    Take care and heal well,

    Mike

Thanks, guys. I went to an ankle specialist today. He's going to operate on it on Tuesday. I'll be two weeks in a splint, then a cast. Once in the cast, I can return to work on a knee scooter. After 4 weeks in the cast, I'll get the boot and be able to walk and begin therapy.
At least I have this, wheelbuilding and building my son's bike. I can also further hot rod my commuting folder now that I won't be riding it.

    Quick Update:
I had surgery on March 16th. I had to keep my foot elevated 22 of 24 hours a day for two weeks. I kept it elevated and kept it absolutely dry as per doc's orders. When I had my follow up visit, everything was perfect. I went straight into a boot instead of a cast. This was huge for me because I can remove it for sleep and showering. Doctor also told me to take it off when sitting and flex my ankle.
I've just finished my second week back to work with a knee scooter. I still can't put weight on it. Another ten days or so, another follow up visit and I believe PT starts up. I already have no pain. Hopefully, I snap back pretty quickly.
I just have to seal up the tires on my boy's bike and install the brakes and drivetrain.

Great to hear about the good progress on your ankle! As with most mountain bikers I've been forced off the bike for extended periods due to injury. The hardest part for me was not the physical pain, it was the mental part. Stay with it!

For sure. I was only on the pain meds for about 12 hours. The time I was laid up with my foot elevated was the worst. I couldn't even build wheels. Now that I'm somewhat mobile and back to work, it makes it much easier to deal with. All I keep thinking about is my son's first ride on his new bike.

I had my first ride yesterday. Stuck to the family trail... My boy and I did two laps. It was his first ride on his new fat bike and my first ride since the break.
    Felt fantastic to be back.
Thanks for all the well wishes. I'll post a couple of pics when I get downstairs to my other computer.

Congrats on getting back on two wheels. Being injured really sucks, been there and hope not to go there again.

Edit - I also built a knee bike when I ruptured my Achilles tendon. It really helped me maintain my insanity.

Maiden voyage on the finished bike. It was a long wait but the ride was awesome.
