The 1st UK FAT BIKE Gathering, 17th & 18th September 2011, Northumberland

UK Fatbike history in the making,
The 1st UK meet of Fat bikes in the UK,
9 of us made it for a great weekend of beachriding at Northumberland,
meeting new friends and online forum friends at last since the start of our forum ...
despite arriving in sideways rain we got the tents up and Saturday dawned with clearing skies, we had a great ride on the beach out to Holy Island, and got back just in time before the heavans opened , then we got an amazing sunset, had a stove on, ate and drank fine beers, ciders and some amazing Irish and scottish Whisky,
Sunday dawned with clearing skies after again wild and heavy rain, we ppacked up and drove a few miles to Bamburgh and one of the UKs best Castles above a big wide smooth beach, It was a amazing ride with all the bikes down to Seahouses for fish and chips
Dont think i will ever forget this weekend, Good times...

Here is some pics, will get a film together through the week

Looks like you guys had a grand time! Looking forward to seeing some film.

Be sure to post some names to the faces for the rest of us.

Did you do very many 'games' such as some did seeing who could cut the sharpest
around the cone? The such like would be fun to see.

Thanks again!

Hooligans............

A great weekend, thanks for the laughs, company and riding.

Because of a smash on the M6 and stationary traffic for ages making my return home very late I've not had chance to do my photos.

If I get wifi in the hotel tonight I'll do it then otherwise it won't be until I get home on Friday.

NOTE TO ALL
It's in the South Lake District next summer (maybe)

I think Coastkid did a video of said trailer tent. A superb bit of kit. I certainly suffered from accommodation envy sitting in my two man tent

this is why im buying a new fat bike...my girlfriend lives here, its sand riding heaven.

she lived in ravenstown, and you can walk from there across the sands to chapel island, in the middle, think its 1.5miles in. then right over onto bardsea beach when the tides out.

huge landscape, check it put on google maps.

when we walked it this year, the deepest water was in a few small sections as the tide was still going out, on the way back it was well out and way easier.

thats when i decided i needed another fat bike.

Excellent!

I was expecting more of a reaction to the fatties from the folks in the village (and on the beach?). Maybe nothing fazes the Northies (compared to CO, US)?

Really good stuff, I was lauging at the synchronized cone riding - nice work.

Thanks for the complements. It's the people in it that make the movie IMHO.

What a fab weekend - quite emotional just thinking about all the great memories in such a short space of time

Big thanks due to those who sowed the seed for this meet; to the 'facility' providers without whom we'd have been much wetter and under-tea/coffee'd; and for the t-shirts and stickers

Pulling monster beach wheelies is easier than editing, my coal fired PC is groaning away at all the files, having to upload in 4 sections...but we will get there...

Aye, the stickers and T shirt is ace!, top weekend, and a right laugh too

Thanks to all for such a great weekend, I've never seen so many pictures where everyone is either smiling or laughing out loud.

Makes me want to buy a plane ticket for next year's meet! Ship my bike to the Coast Kid ahead of time... I've tried and tried to get FBer's together here in Washington State... No Takers! Ton's of reg. mtb-ing going on... most still scoffing and chuckling 'bout the fatties. You can lead a cyclist to water, but you can't make him drink! Maybe someday... With the exception of one pugsly on a short, local dirt ride, the only folks I've ridden FB's with were borrowing one (or both) of my bikes. Gettin' lonely around here! Even though we have plenty of snow in the winter, great beach's and even inland dunes (not to mention a ton of great east slope dessert... very "fatable") riders around here just can't "cross the line" and get on board... like they're embarassed to be seen on one or something. Wake up Northwesterner's- FAT IS FUN!

Ward, Come on up to Anchorage sometime. There are even bikes to rent for a reasonable price and great riding summer or winter. Not that the trip to England wouldn't be Epic, I woild like to ride with these guys too, but the ticket would be cheaper and we are only one hour different on the time zone. Steve

The photos are all great and truly represent the Saturday I was there.

I can be free with a few weeks notice for future rides

I'm very puzzled, and a little sad, to hear this. I've seen your great (and inspiring) videos, you're certainly getting the message out there. And like you said, you've got perfect Fat Bike conditions. Makes no sense. The great Northwest should be a Fat Bike Mecca.
Keep trying, If you haven't tried facebook, it's a good source for speading and hearing about Fat Bike love.

We're lucky to have a huge, and growing Fat Bike scene here in the north/midwest (Minnesota, Wisconsin, northern Illinois, Iowa) thanks to a few very good Fat Bike preachers, ~gomez~, schmenzer, benwitt and Guitar Ted here on this forum, and bike shops like North Central Cyclery in northern Illinois, and Milltown Cycles in Minnesota, who love them and ride them. It probably doesn't hurt to have Surly and Salsa in Minnesota, and Schlick Cycles in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
(I apologize if I forgot to mention anyone)

A friend I just met, is opening a new bike shop in Rockford Illinois. He was looking into bike brands to carry in his shop, and was thinking about Salsa, after I let him ride my Mukluk he's now one of us. He said he wants a fleet of Fat Bikes in his shop.

Coastkid, totally agree with your comments in relation to the Singletrack forum and the replies.

Don't give up though.

Some people just don't get it, and probably never will.

Has anyone approached Chipps / Singletrack to do a feature on comparing / testing Fat Bikes?

They seem to be keen on our niche, as motorman said.

Gents I write and snap for Singletrack, I'm working on getting fat bikes into the mag, in fact Janes Mucluk is on test right now and had I been able to attend last weekend it would have been written up for an article (whether or not it got printed is a different story), perhaps one of you who did attend could do it ?.

There's no doubt that fat bikes are going to grow in popularity, the interesting thing is whether or not they grow enough to warrent much media attention, ten years ago people were laughing at 29ers !

As for the forum, well best taken with a large pinch of salt I find ;-)

I'm gutted I missed this. Next time don't clash with SSUK and I'll be there.

Still I got to ride the On One prototype around 1/4 of the race lap. I have a pug and it's going to give it a run for it's money, it's very stable, harder to wheelie but a niiiiiiiice ride..

As long as interest in them grows enough on a world market to allow product development I'd be happy. I think the UK will remain a very limited market for a long time because most people live in the most of the places where you don't need a fatbike & thus the majority just don't "get" the concept or the need for it.

It would be nice to get to the point where parts were easily obtainable in the UK tho, Waiting months for ISON to deliver tyre stock is not exactly idea

Anyway, long range forecast is for a long snowy winter again this year, so when it does fall & the STW forum is full of folks complaining trail conditions, I will take great pleasure in posting up some media attention of my bike doing what they can't......riding all year, whatever the weather!!

I hear ya CK, I get alot of similar reaction here in Wash. State. Some cyclists can be so narrow minded. I don't "poo" on "free-bikin'", "big air", road bikin' or even BMX. Why they have to knock what other's are doin' w/ peddles I don't know. Funny thing is, It's the motorized folks (Off roader's) that get it. They understand what we're doin' w/ high floatation before I explain it to them. Cyclist's get so brain washed about shaving ounce's, they can't see the forest (or the beach) through the trees... and they've got the "motor's" to power these machines. If I won the Lotto, I'd buy a trailer full and travel around offering them up for cheap rent for "fat education"... and FUN of corse!

If it annoys a few folk on STW Forum then i will keep putting pics and films up , anyway there just the rotten apples in a good barrel of decent folk on there, and a lot of folk are fat- curious,

The weekend at Northumberland was indeed mostly flat hard/wet sand but its the size of the beaches there that grab you,
I chose there as some have not ridden sand before, and it was not planned to be hard riding,
If you read my blog you will know that not all coastline is flat, we have some seriously hard techy rocky stuff which some of which i still cant clean without a dab or two,
Also there are miles of sweepy sandy singletrack between steep banks and sea buckthorn that are a blast,
Once my fatbike No2 arrives at Xmas any of the septics- i mean sceptics () who want to have a go should come along and have a try

Chipps has indeed got Janes bike so we should see some mainstram fat stuff in the Newsagents in the future here

It would be awesome to see you over here, Ward ...but a LONG way to come!!

The negative comments you get on forums like Singletrack have to just be treated like water of a duck's back IMHO. Not everyone is going to see the light and those who feel the need to say negative comments say more about themselves. I'm just chuffed my video is on there and we've got 'outsiders' viewing it: if it gets just one person thinking about how sociable, adventurous and different fat-riding can be, etc then

I know there are (or at least were) a couples of Pugsleys in Mexico....but in almost two years around I just haven't heard of them.

No problems

Next years "World Gathering" may be be on the Yorkshire coast line (see Andy & Jane)

The year's after may be in South West Cumbria (See Dr Feelygood)

And who know's the year after we may even venture up to the Scottish Hebrides beaches

Bike and Bivi • View topic - Northumberland Fat Bikes cheat Bivi 17/18th Sept

It reads
"Can you help...my name is Darren and I was with a bunch of guys who were taking part in a charity bike ride last weekend and due to the weather got stuck at Goswick Golf club on Friday night. I just want to say a massive thank you to the two guys who took a load of wet, cold and very tired people back to thier hotel. The team can't thank you enough. We had been cycling sine 06.00 in the morning from Edinburgh and if we hadn't been picked up I feel some of the guys would have been in trouble. If you could send me your e-mails it would be goodto keep in touch. I have attached a link showing our charity page. Our aim is to raise 5,000 for CLIC a charity close to one of the team members as his 2 year old son has liver cancer. Once again thank you for the lift 'home'. Darren."
