Stock Scott Spark Jr or modified Trek MT220

In a dilemma. I was in the process of building up an older Trek M220 for my girl, when a Scott Scale Jr. popped up for sale.

As you all know, It is a very hard to find bike, and pretty much the top of the line as far as kids bikes.

I was building this bike up with SRAM X9 9 speed drivetrain, and swapping the carbon handlebars and seatpost over from her little Hotrock. It's also going to have Avid SD brakes, and a local shop is rebuilding the wheelset with newer quick release hubs, and 1/2 the spokes.

Obviosuly, Scott Spark is full suspension, and has mid-range components on it. Most of the guys here who have them end up swapping the rear shock for an air shock, and swapping the mid-range Shimano drivetrain for better, lighter stuff too.
If I got the Scott, the budget for upgrades would be out the window, If she's lucky enough that the seatpost is the same diameter, I might swap her carbon one over, but otherwise, the wife would kill me if I spent much on it.

I don't have the budget for that. I'd probably have $400-$500 or so in either one in the end.

She's moving up from a modified 20" Hotrock, with no suspension at all.

    Ugh!

Oh, and if any of you are bidding on it, please forgive me.

if she is happy on a rigid bike already, i say upgrade the 220.

the jump from 20" to 24" will feel like sus already, since itll roll better and clear stuff she (might have) struggled with before.

then again, all MY bikes are rigid.

and so are my girls' bikes.

then you can save your pennies for an xs juliana or something when she goes 26".

after dropping the coin on a new shock (and really, a new fork would be ideal), wow. pricey.

a wheel rebuild on the 220 will go a long way.

    and this, too:

F1RST Air 24" MTB Federgabel schwarz | MTB Gabel gŁnstig kaufen

rigid is def better than crap sus.

make a good hardtail, then when another spark jr pops up, youll have good whels and a good fork already.

or, keep it rigid and use the cheapest method of dropping weight:

DMR Simple Tension Seeker & Single Speed Kit | Chain Reaction Cycles

I think I will keep building the Trek... We ride some hilly trails here, so the bike will have gears. Although I am making it 1x9.
She wants a fancy paint job, and I'd have a tough time taking the Scott all apart to paint it.

Yea. I passed on the Scott. I can't resist tinkering anyway, so would have upgraded it and spent way too much money on it in the end.
This Trek is going to turn out pretty nice, I think.
