    Rocking bike

Finished with a project I've been working on today: a rocking bike.

I'd picked up the base bike back in the spring for $10 at a thrift store with the thought that I might be able to lighten it up enough to ride, but
pretty quickly abandoned that idea. It's been hanging in the garage ever since and I'd been debating what to do with it before coming up with the idea of putting it on a rocking platform.

Matthias (3.5) was barely starting to stand up on pedals before it started getting cold, so I figured it'd be good if he had a way of practicing that and balance while pumping as it gets too snowy to ride outside.

He's taking to it pretty quickly. We've had some other rocking toys around the house, but I've never seen him this excited about them:

Swapped saddle with one from a cheap balance bike we'd also picked up from the thrift store: lower seat should help a little.

For those curious about the construction:
    • Rockers are 44" long 2x10's, with a 42" radius curve on bottom
    • Supports for the bike are 2x6's held in place with kreg HD screws
    • The supports are 18" long to leave plenty of room to maneuver feet on the pedals
    • Fork and rear dropouts attach to 3/8" threaded rods
    • To hold the rods in place, I just used a 3/8 v-shape router bit to cut grooves in pairs of 2x4's and screwed them together to clamp them down.

Josh (1.5) isn't even riding a balance bike, but he's got the basics down

I was joking with my wife that I should make an adult version out of her old Schwinn when I get her a new bike in the spring.

The RipRow is pretty close and was one of my inspirations for the project (along with the Strider rocking base):
