Monarch plus rc3 (non Debonair) on Wrecker question...

SO.... my vivid air shock just shit the bed, and I am headed to Moab next week. I can score a monarch plus for a good price and was curious as to everyone's thought on this shock on a wrecker. I'm not super heavy, about 195 lbs/88.5 kg with gear. the shock has good reviews online, but I would like to hear from some evil owners before making the switch. TIA

I've only ever tried the X2 and monarch plus on my wreck but here goes.

With the monarch plus I found myself close to the end of the rebound range and could never get it feeling quite right (I'm 95kgs loaded up). I got it tuned (re-shimmed) for my weight and the leverage curve of the bike and it was a huge improvement over stock.

It is a fine shock and plenty lively but I never found it particularly refined. I could get the small bump ok but then it lacked support. I could get the support but then it felt a bit wooden.

Although its a pain to setup a found the X2 to be a much better shock. It just works as you'd hope through every part of the travel.

The monarch will be fine but if you can find one I'd try a DPX2 or coil (by reputation). Or X2
