First Enduro bike for a teen

    Hello guys,

My son would like to start riding Enduro. He has a good amount of experience on trails and on BMX pump parks.

Which bike would you recommend? We are looking for something light.

Anyone have any experience with Norco bikes? The Optic for example? https://www.norco.com/bikes/mountain/trail/

Would the Norco optic bike (travel is 130/120) work for Enduros? I see everywhere that for Enduro 160/160 is recomended.

My son is light (105 lbs), so I would guess that the Optic suspension would be plenty.

    Any advice is welcome!

    Thank you,
    Dan

How old and tall is your kid? What height do you expect them to grow to in the next year or so?

    Hi thesmokingman,

He is 15, and is 5'2 tall. As for what height do I expect him to grow, it is difficult to say, he is still young, maybe he will be around 5'8 - 5'9 when he will be 18,

    Thank you!

Your kid is similar in size to mine. They are slightly in between sizes, ie. just a wee too short for adult smalls. I think its a safe bet that they will grow a couple inches since they are hitting that last big growth spurt in HS, knock on wood. I wouldn't want to throw down on an XS size to have them grow out of it sooner than later. Also frame sizing differs a bit between brands like for ex, our kids would be too small DB Release 3 Small size but they would fit a SC Bronson Small size easily.

Now for the bike, the Optic looks to be a trail slash xc bike. It's geometry is a mix of trail and xc so it is quite up to general enduro specs. If your son is doing more gravity runs, then I'd want more travel and something slacker.

My son is 5’2” / 100lb and is on a small Kona Process.

Has no problem handling techincal North Shore trails or Whistler.

Thank you guys for your advices!

I am concerned by the weight of the bike, because for Enduro he will have to pedal up.
What would be an acceptable weight limit? As my son is 105 (pretty light), I do not want something too heavy for him.
It is quite difficult to find bike weight online.

@NS-NV: do you have an idea of the weight of your son's bike (Kona Process)? Is he riding a CR, AL, or SE?

    Again thank you,
    Dan

    Aluminum SE. Probably 30ish lbs.

The biggest gain for him climbing, was learning how to spin properly (or at least kinda ok). Lots of practice, and climbing won’t be an issue.
