24 Hours in the Enchanted Forest - McGaffey/Gallup, NM

It was announced today that the race is ON for next weekend (6/23-24), after being in doubt due to potential forest closures due to fire danger.

    Who's doing what?

I'll be doing solo SS, though not part of the series (24EF is the first race of the year in the N24 – National 24 Hour Series Championship for Solo Racers).

I did this in 2011, and since then, they have flipped the course, so it's now clockwise, vs. CCW previously. It's a great course, and the Zuni National Forest is beautiful.

    Weather looks to be ideal...

There with 4 man team. Goal is a win, but would be happy on podium. Last year our team was 2nd overall.

How do you like the course CCW? Did you ever do it the CW "old way"?

absolutely! I've been digging the low key / grassroots feel of Seth's events and have never made the trek down that way. Just glad it's going to happen.

I only rode the course last year and climb up Quaking Aspen was pretty fun. I was on geared bike last year and will be this year too. Like the course much better than Old Pueblo.

And it likely that our paths will cross out there some time. Will you be in Vassago Kit all day? If so I will look for the guy with big guns in the Vassago kit. If not just big guns on a SS. Still should not be hard to find.

Awesome and yeah, don't puke on your shoes at 2am. Although feel free to swing by at 2am for some whiskey.

And I'll be on a Lynskey Ridgeline wearing a blue/white/black/orange kit. Feel free to make fun of the stupid low gear ratio I'll be spinning.

I sure needed some whiskey last year, especially in the morning when I learned that when I stopped riding I was running somewhere around 2nd place.

Thanks, man!! I'm pretty damn happy with that finish on that course on an SS. In addition to 4/19 in the solo SS cat, I ended up 12/74 overall, for all solo men. Just kept going...

It wasn't pretty but I won it. Just like last year my stomach started to turn after 10 laps. Luckily we were camping with an awesome group and I had a lot of support and encouragement that kept me going. There was even a cycling coach in our group to support a couple of his riders and he helped me get back on track to get 16 laps.

That is sick...great job!! 16 is stout! I think I could eke out 15, but can't see 16...

What bike were you on? I'm sure we must have crossed paths out there.

Nice! I saw you a few times but only at transition and as always in sleep deprived mode it took way too long for that info to process.

I'd think (didn't run ss) that it would have been a great SS course with that pretty gradual climb.

Great job! We had a good weekend team wise but my back is angry from teh drive home.

We had a great race and ran much faster than in 2017. Each man improve lap average and overall times. We ran about 1 hour faster overall and thus got 24 laps in vs 23 in 2017. Dropped average lap time by 2 min and lap for lap every lap was fast except 1 which was 15 seconds slower. Still only good enough for 2nd place. First place team was pretty strong.

In then end we can't complain one bit.

Yeah you guys were all going good, I checked your times and my best was 1:45 slower even though I only turned 3 laps. Good job!

Fun course too, I'll be back next year!

Thanks! I was on my Lynskey in a mostly blue and black kit. What were you riding? I'm sure I saw you...

I was on track to get 17 laps but I took an hour and a half break around 4am to let my stomach settle. Something about that course makes me want to puke. 濫

I think I saw 3 Vassago Ti bikes but I don't believe I saw you. It's weird how you can be timed with other riders to never see them on the course. It's happened before in other races. And other races you'll see someone constantly throughout the race.

Anyway, fun times out there. Such a great and challenging race.

I'm a big 'maybe' for both.

I'd commit to doing Oregon 24 because I live in Bend but I'm doing a 150 mile race the weekend before. I'll probably make the decision a couple days before the race to see if I'm up to it.

I'll probably do Frog Hollow if the weather looks decent and if I'm able to keep fitness that late in the season so it'll be a last minute decision for that race too. Too far of a drive down there for 25 hours of misery on a bike.

I sent emails to N24 and the 24hrs in the Canyon organizers trying to get them talking, it would be nice to see another 24 hr race added to the series.
I'm out of racing till late this year, I want to make sure I'm 100 percent healed before pushing to hard.
    Next year!!!!
