New question here. Torrance Barrens 2017 Thread

BCD (or any other riders in the locale), any idea when the Barrens should be OK to ride? How much warm weather do the earthen sections require before it's rideable & not just rolling thru mud?

Good question. And if anyone can advise if the bridges have been fixed yet that would be awesome.

I was there about a week or two ago. Most of the muddy sections are on the snowmobile trail in the north end. Nice thing about the Barrens is that it's mostly open bedrock so for the few sections of mud that you do run into on the trail you can simply ride around. The bridges are still a hazard and I recommend taking extreme caution if you cross them. I plan to go up on Wednesday or Thursday and can give another update.

Went out for a bit today. It was great. It's really not that muddy, wet but not muddy. Picture at the jeep is post ride to give you an idea of how little mud there actually is. Bridges are barely passable in the west but the east one is a bit more solid. Get out now for awesome spring riding!

    ditto...

Rode the Barrens, it's a favourite of mine and always special! The Pine Lake Loop is marked closed because the bridges are really sketchy now. We rode it regardless. Funding was announced to replace them late last year, I hope it gets done this year...

I want to go here this summer at some point.

Lets say the bridge picture above isn't fixed, will it ruin the trip or should I wait? I'm not afraid of getting wet, as long as it isn't poo green water or cold as hell.

We walk across the broken sections of bridges. Not that difficult if you watch where you place your feet and walking the bike helps keep balance ( tripod effect). Trust me, if my wife can do it so can you lol
I wouldn't come in summer, deer flies are BRUTAL! Get here by early June latest or else wait until late August or September. For sure worth the trip, it's a magical place! Sunny days are the best imo!

PS: - the Pine Lake Loop is marked closed, it has the worst bridges as shown above. Peeps that know just go around the barrier

Awesome pictures as usual. I see Blue is staying out of the water
I can testify to the deer fly. Made that mistake once. Definitely worth the trip, especially if you can do Buckwallow the same day or next.

    Bridges Update

I was recently in touch with Muskoka Lakes Township regarding the deteriorated bridge structures at The Barrens. I was advised that the 3 structures should be replaced by sometime in August. There are 2 structures at the adjacent Hardy Lake Provincial Park that are up for replacement first, those to be done in July.

    So ....YAY!!!!

An FYI ... although the township had applied for provincial funding there was none forth coming from the very tired and tiring Liberal govenment. Possibly because Muskoka traditionally votes Conservative??? NAH ...couldn't be

When I went there in the spring, there where a lot of mosquitoes.
I remember, parking and just sitting there in the car, they were swarming the windows as if knowing there was fresh blood inside.

Deer and horseflies are done in the bush, maybe the odd mosquito. I may head over this weekend if the weather co-operates.

Made it over to the Barrens yesterday. Saw to other riders including a guy w/ a 'Specialized' bike that looked like what they would make for sale @ Crappy Tire or Wally Mart. Nice touch the blaring boom box. Met another rider just as I was finishing. No sign of any prep for the bridge repairs. From what I saw, it would be prudent for them to repair all of them as the ones closer to the trail head as starting to suffer from broken deck pieces.

Stopped for a snack @ what I call 'Lunch Break Ridge':

    Water???

Was just up there this weekend and was shocked to see the water gone from the pond that is circled by the Barrens extension trail. The beaver dam at the north-west end has been cut to let all the water run out...anybody know why?

I was assuming the MNR. But then I have been told they do not do this sort of thing. I should call MLT and inquire if they know. Also curious about what happened to the planned bridge work that was supposed to be done in August!

AFAIK the MNR has a hands off policy on beaver dams. That being said, for the last few years the beaver have plugged a culvert beside Hwy 28 between Burleigh Falls & Apsley, creating a new pond. It's in the Peterborough Crown Game Preserve, so trapping the pests is a no no. Can't wait until something happens and half of the highway gets washed away.
