Stolen bike in Hamilton - recovered by police

Odd story - didn't think the police bothered much with bike theft. Wonder why they got involved?

Stolen bike leads police to drug bust

An investigation into a high-end bike theft led police to about $50,000 in illegal drugs.

Police said the High Enforcement Action Team (HEAT) began an investigation Wednesday night into a bike theft. This took officers to 1900 Main St. W., where a suspected drug deal was observed.

They later raided an apartment in that building and found what they called "a large quantity" of drugs with a street value of $50,000.

"It's primarily marijuana in a variety of forms," said Hamilton police media relations officer Const. Stephen Welton.

The stolen bike was returned to its owner, he said, and knives, including a large machete, were also found in the apartment.

The use whatever means they can to gain entry... The bike theft would have been their "just cause" to enter and search. Not having a reason other than having a "feeling" would mean the people they arrested would be tossed out on their bad planning.

The police can do whatever they want, be it search for lost dogs & cats, or bike, or drugs. They choose what they want to do, the drug issue has much higher value to someones career than stolen bikes. Someone would get an attaboy for uncovering all that street trash, whereas bike theft isn't much of a pat on the back from anyone but the owner.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with you, Todd. It's unfortunate, but that's the reality we live in now...
