My visit to Clarenville Newfoundland - Part 1

Since my arrival to NF last Sunday, Ive been looking for some
mtb trails. The only trials I was able to find are listed on this page:

    http://www.trails.com/explore/x/mz/a...D5C50DBDF82%7D

Im in Lewisporte, half way between St. Johns and Corner Brook (4 hrs drive one way). Wanted to pick up some trail, which would take less than 2 hrs drive and be longer than 6 miles. Decided on Clarenville, located right on TCH 1, half way between Gander and St. Johns. From the description of the trial I knew it is about 15 miles (24 km) long and it climbs to a former communication tower (total elevation about 1000 feet) and it requires a good cardiovascular endurance.

Very nice ride, it took me about 2.5 hours to complete. First half of the ride it was just climbing on rocky access roads, with some short flats just enough to get ready for a next climbing challenge. Views are spectacular, especially when on the top. The way back wasnt as easy as I thought initially. Fast downhill over loose rocks and gravel makes my wrists sore after about 10 minutes of descending.

Im posting some pictures from the ride, hoping you may enjoy looking at them.

    Hi JR,

    Nice single track ;-)

It looks like it was a beaftiful day for riding. What was the temperature?
Those rocks look like a lot of fun, it must of been a good work out.

    Thanks for the pics.

    Rail Trail

Find the old Rail line and go nuts, it should pass along near most towns around there..
I know in the Corner Brook / Deer Lake theres a ton of trails that spur off of it, no idea on the quality of the spurs, but from what I did ride the main trail had decent quality gravel on it.

Another thought is some of the logging roads, just grab a bag of bread crumbs or a GPS and start riding, there should be a ton of trails shooting off . From what I've driven and seen a lot of logging roads are shown on Topo maps as well..

    Have fun!

I need a GPS. Already pick a model and a Topo maps. Now I have to convince my wife that $1000 is not too much and I really need it

This coming weekend I'm planing a trip to Come By Chance. From the description of the trial it looks like there are some technical single track trials. I will see.
