    I was watching the XC eliminator on Friday afternoon. A couple of the riders had "stay strong Annefleur" written on tape and stuck on their helmets. Tragic.

    I can't seem to find anything on the 'net about what actually happened. Anyone know?
    Strava made me do it....

    Slightly more detail here;

    It doesn't take that much of a hit of the front section of the head landing fairly square with pavement - even with a helmet - to have the potential for a fatal injury. (Disclaimer concerning my knowledge of head injuries: I don't play a doctor on TV, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night)

    More 3rd party information here;

    Flyovers have been in use for a long time, of course, but maybe with the higher "burst" speeds of the eliminator and limited chances to make up time as in a full length XC events, riders - still on XC bikes and gear - are taking these features more aggressively than they are used to?

    This has really shaken me to my core. I've crawled away from many crashes that I shouldn't have this year and watched many friends do the same. I did something similar...hit a bridge feature funny (a little too slow, a little too far to the right), lost my balance, and fell about 10 feet onto a boulder field. Shattered my leg, but I had full dh gear on which protected my spine and head. It could have and should have been so so much worse. I don't even want to think about what might have happened if I hadn't worn my full face or my spine protector that day...

    I remember following Annefleur's triumphs in cyclocross. She was amazing and is still an inspiration. RIP. This is devastating.
