Done. I quite enjoy the trails up there. I usually get a road trip or two up there in each year but must admit that I have not been in nearly 5 years now.

it's great to see the mtn biking community come together like this when needed.

done! If it's the same equestrian group that forced the removal/destruction of the Old Stanton hotel, we're in trouble

The questrian group seems to have alot of influence with city council. I think the petition won't help us. We need a person with clout to beat the questrian group

Hey everyone. Here's the story…after 2.5 years of public meetings and two months of public consultation the Forest Operations Committee, Community Services Committee and Dufferin Council all unanimously approved the Dufferin Forest Recreation Policy. In this policy (section 17) there is a provision for separate trail networks to be established. Our County Forest Manager knowing the the major stakeholders made the decision to designate some trails as biking/hiking trails. There are still over 60 km of marked equestrian trails remaining for equestrian use. Some equestrians did not approve of this decision (most of them not ironically from Dufferin County) and protested the decision. They presented a petition and had delegations at a Community Services Meeting. They brought in representatives from the Ontario Trails Council and as a mountain bike representative, a member of the Gears Bike Shop staff in Oakville to promote multi-use trails with the intent to overturn the County Forester's decision.
They have formed a Dufferin Forest Riders Equestrian Club with the intent of lobbying the County to reverse the decision.
A committee is being formed in September to discuss the requirements of the user groups and provide feedback to the County. A petition (the one above in Trail Trashes original post) to demonstrate support for our Council's and County Forester's decision was also created. It is important to sign this, pass it along and most of all provide a comment why you support the decisions the have been made.
Always remember as well that there are a large number of equestrians that are in support of the separate trail network philosophy and they deserve our respect and appreciation. A large number of them see the long term benefits from this arrangement. Please continue to be polite and corjual with many of the equestrian users as most of them are awesome.
So there you have it…the most important thing is to stay involved, sign the petition, pass it on, remain patient, help and comment whenever you can. Our voice is changing and has matured. It is co-operative, polite and reasonable. I have seen all that in the comments on the petition and it is amazing. Take the time and read through the comments on the petition and you will see what I mean. We have all become a pretty amazing group of people and we should be proud of that. Thanks for all you have done so far, your efforts do not go unnoticed and are appreciated. Stick together and see you on the trails.
