    Bridges of Eastern Canada

The Weir Canal Bridge, "The Hood" Port Colborne.

Spotted a Bald Eagle flying around the Weir Canal today. It was too quick for me to photograph.

Today, we rode the frozen Humber River.

Early spring ride (too wet for Don Trails), we did a couple years ago from the Brickworks, and throughout Rosedale. We encountered several historical bridges including this one

    A few from today.

Foot and bike bridge over Rouge river at the mouth.

    From a different angle.

    GO and VIA, same place.

This one below (Highland creek by East Point park) made news a week or two back after they caught terrorists on it plotting to sabotage it to cause a VIA crash.

Cyclelicious, this is a wonderful thread!

I guess every forum can't be a passion forum but listening to arguments about who is a "real" trail builder gets old. Well done.

this is not about who is a better trail builder biggie. it's about posting what you know about building trail, politics aside... it's about providing information to people how to build trail in eastern canada... and to show what projects you have worked on...

^^ What can I say Biggie?... I like bridges! and so do others. I like riding them, I like stopping and enjoying the view and I've lent a hand to help build a few on a small scale. It's nice to learn about others experiences. I'm glad you like bridges too.

This thread inspires me to do a back road tour of the county to photograph / visit all the abandoned bridges here in Norfolk.

Singlesprocket, Jerry and I had a fun ride exploring Clairville today. We got to cross the bowstring bridge twice. Unfortunately the river was unrideable (too much snow cover)

The Hamilton Bridge Company made a number of bridges in Southern Ontario (now regarded as historical)

Conestogo: built in1886 Waterloo Region, Ontario. This bridge is among the oldest metal truss bridges remaining in Canada

As much as I begrudgingly accept that wider bridges in the Don are probably a good idea from a community safety standpoint, I do miss the old school sketchiness. Maybe we should paint the outline of the old skinny on the new wide-ass bridges to document history for all who pass.

Lots of pictures of people riding on partially frozen rivers and streams. I guess the fat bikes probably would float if the ice broke.

    Sherway Dr Bridge

    Year constructed: 1909

Type: Pedestrian bridge over Etobicoke Creek

    Ownership: City of Toronto

Sometimes referred to as the “Middle of the Road Bridge,” the historically important span is the first Canadian example of a reinforced concrete truss. The bridge was part of an important transportation corridor that connected York and Peel counties and lives on as a local landmark.

Sauce: Toronto?s oldest bridges have lasted quite a span | Toronto Star

As I wait another week or two for the trails to melt I'm sticking to road/gravel.

Here's a cool swing bridge spanning the Rideau Canal in Burritts Rapids, Ontario. The town was originally settled in 1793 and the single lane swing bridge built in 1897. I saw it in operation this past summer where a single individual can crank it up and out of the way.

Ridden on or by some of those

    My additions:

"Nassau" bridge over Trent Canal in Peterborough.

Does east of Hwy 11 count as Eastern Ontario?

Hwy 115 overpass (Ptbo bypass) Trans Canada Trail looking west:

Trail on former CN railbed runs from Ptbo thru Hastings to Campbellford

Former CPR swing bridge over Otonabee River:

The railbed on either side of the river is part of the TCT. W/ this stretch of the river part of the Trent-Severn Canal, I think the bridge is going to be left open. the CPR said repair costs of half a million (and only 1 customer) led them to abandon the spur. Cyclists have to use Lansdowne St. to get around this.

I've ridden across this bridge (Orange Corners trestle) between Ptbo & Omemee, but can't find any of my pics :-(

    1) Madawaska River bridge in Algonquin Provincial Park. This is on the portion of the OA&PS railbed that was opened just prior to this pic being taken. It joins the Old Railway Bike Trail to the track & Tower Trail.

    2) A small bridge on the ORBT over a creek @ the NW end of Whitefish Lake.

Excellent bridge pics revrnd. Thanks for sharing. That Orange Corners trestle is interesting. Is it also known as Doube's tresle bridge?

Located just west of Orange Corners Road, this
    famous trestle bridge provides remarkable
sightseeing opportunities for trail users. Spanning over
200 metres, Doube’s Bridge is suspended 29 metres
above Buttermilk Valley, an area of dense vegetation,
streams and woodland, showcasing the true spirit of
    the Kawarthas.

^ Beautiful scenery in Glen Major. I've never mtb there but it looks very nice. Checking on the map... it's close to Goodwood! which is where some of Schitt's Creek is filmed! Now we must check it out

Glen Major and Walker Woods do have some great scenery and lots of km of trails. With Durham Forest and Dagmar North Trails across the road there is very little traffic in there as well.

Rode the 36 klicks from Campbellford to Hastings & back. Lots of osprey nests and even saw a couple of young ones in the nest near the Hastings swing bridge.

The 1st small bridge is just west of Campbellford. The swing bridge is west of Hastings over the Trent River. It is open from April to November. There is signage showing a detour to use the bridge further east in town to get across the river.

A pic taken after the bridge failure back in '03. A temporary Bailey bridge was placed just east of the bridge for highway traffic.

Before this "fix" traffic had to divert into Quebec between Notre-Dame-Du-Nord & Temiscaming

I was in the area on Thurs' & snapped this photo. Hoping the work on the approaches to the bridges doesn't take too long.

Who will be the 1st to post a pic of their bike (or self) on the bridge?

Snowy bridges today. The river banks are freezing and soon will be ready for ice biking

Learned my lesson a few years ago in West Virginia. Crossing a damp bridge (in the shade & my back wheel slid out from under me. Ever since then I've paid more attention crossing wet wooden bridges.

12km run today along the Humber River. Beautiful sunny and mild. Love these bridges in the winter!

I agree...I've complained (although the tags have been there since last fall) . It's only 50m to the new trailhead. The town should get around to painting over this eyesore.

We checked out the recently completed multi-use connector trail in the Nashville Conservation Reserve. We crossed the old bowstring bridge which is planned for removal if it can't be restored

We were there in early August. We had four phenomenal days of riding and I will definitely be going back. Can't wait to do that climb up the fire road on Neilson Est again.

^ We loved VBdN! The climbs are massive but the payoff is the sweet downs

In Shannon we did a very rocky double track climb: nice views at the top.

Not on my MTB, but 2 bridges for the price of 1 yesterday.

    Bridges of Eastern Canada-20180423_121034-pottery-rd-bridges-copy.jpg

Just after this was taken & I had put my phone away a chap came along walking my favourite dog breed, a beagle LOL The had just finished a 3 hour walk up thru the valley.

Up by the sewage plant I spotted a MTBer riding along the trail between the river and tracks. What is the access to the trail? All I could see was using the rail bridge (a no no).

The County plans to replace the bridge this year. It has been 'barricaded' to be only a single lane bridge for a couple of years now.

This bridge is being removed & replaced w/ a new structure this year. It had been downgraded to a single lane bridge a couple of years.

Doing some gravel route recon, this bridge collapsed some time between when google earth took its last satellite photo and now.

A nice 15km detour and I was treated to this old wooden decked gem...
