2014 Fall Epic 8... Lets talk about it!

September 27 at Hardwood, who's in?
Course is open now for pre-riding.
I'm in a "fun" 4 man team with my teen sons and a friend from Sudbury.
Look out for team "Bombashandry" as you say "on your left".

    Good times!

Solo singlespeed. Again. A sucker for punishment. The third Serious vs Unglued vs 14Stone 8 hour throwdown of the year. I am racing under the name "All They Know is He's Called the Stig".

I am super-disappointed that there is no series competition for all 3 races. One of the reasons I committed to doing all 3 races solo singlespeed is so that I could compete for the series podium although I don't thing Serious can be caught at this point.
    Strava made me do it....

I'm in. Though not sure in what format yet. I think solo, tag-team and 4 person are still a possibility. 4 person is preferable, but not sure if that will pan out, which then leaves a decision between solo and tag-team.

I know a girl who races in Master Expert who is looking for a team if you want to do a mix 4-person. She's pretty fast, usually comes in 2nd at Ocups.

You're gonna love it. The eight hour races are the most enjoyable races of the lot.
I'm going to be there, I think solo ss, although I may try tag too. I haven't registered yet. Guess I'll have to find a team mate (or not) and sign up soon.

The Fall 8H I find is the most fun course of the 3 by far. Mansfield always seems to be the "I find your lack of training disturbing" course. The Summer 8 this year was good fun, but the Fall 8 is usually the easiest of the 3 with a lot of really fun things to look forward to on your laps even 8 hours into it

Dave can do that with or without the Tour Divide. We just need to collaborate and say, slash his tires or maybe spike his water with a tranquilizer. Or find a partner.

I'm looking forward to seeing you guys again (mike, I hope yoreeserios 'bout your re choice of weapon ! ?? )

EDIT. iPod + fat fingers, I don't normally spell like that, not even after a few bottles of Unibrue's "Terrible" ( an awesome beer ).

If I had known all this singlespeed showdown shenanigans was going on before yesterday afternoon I would have asked to borrow my old misfit and got in on the action.

Alas I registered a team. Louda hooked me up with a girl, for my race team that is.

Ha! I'll have to jury rig something.
I think a black wool jersey with AC/DC chalked on it. That'll work eh?

Any chance of you talking egggman into this show?

Tom and I would have made a pretty good team.
My favourite 8 hr ever was a tag with Greg A-B. We both did the 100 at Paul's the week before and afterwards we both agreed that a tag had much more appeal than a solo ( for which we were both signed up ).
Anyone doing Paul's as well as the 8hr this year?
    Cheers, Dave

Hipsters aren't real cyclists, suggesting so confirms my belief that singlespeeders are the the hipsters of the cycling world.

I'm not sure what size Unglued offered bikes are, however, I have 2 underridden rigid SS in size large. The semi-pimped Jamis Exile is available free of charge the Misfit Dissent Fe will cost ya (a six pack of something craft brewed). Take one early for a test run if need be...

With all of the talk of Cervelo's and carbon in this thread I should probably leave...

I ran 34:18 at Mansfield and suffered mightily on the opening climb from about 3pm onwards. I ran 32:18 at Hardwood last month and being able to spin a little more was definitely advantageous. But I was using a new pair of shoes that have carbon soles that caused extreme foot pain in the later hours. I invested in a pair of Specialized insoles which I expect will put paid to this. My nutrition plan worked well last time around so I am going to try the same thing again. So, the trial and error appears to be working out quite nicely, thank you. And then these johnny-come-latelies dskunk and riot sign up and threaten to ruin my day....

Rode the course today. Nice and short with a lot of variety. Some of the markings were confusing, hopefully it's fixed by race day.
A couple of sections I could do without are the ones that are like a path was cut through a hayfield. Those sections are rough with no flow.

All in all, its going to be an awesome race.

2014 Fall Epic 8... Lets talk about it!

I might not do the race if I cannot recover. The Provincials really screwed up my knees and ankles. Too much running and walking in that mud. I should have quit once I realized that my tires and SS were a stupid choice.

I think I will be racing this one, but as our team brought in a "ringer" the rest of the team has decided to drink beer and listen to Death from above1979 all day instead.
I figure i will just go with the same gearing i went with for the spring 8 hour and the summer solstice, 32-20.

I could not hang with the top 3 guys and came 4th with 13 laps. Unglued did well with 12 laps. Unfortunately Riot ended up with 11 laps due to a flat that made him run much a lap. He would certainly have done 12 laps otherwise. Dskunk came 2nd, with 14 laps, in what was a very competitive group.

For me the course was hard, but then I don't think I was fully recovered from last weekend's mudfest at the Provincials. But realistically speaking, the 19-20 minute gap from the 3rd spot would have been hard to close even at my best.

I rode further, faster and harder than I ever have at a solo 8 hour (and I think this is my 8th or 9th) and it was still only good for 7th place. Super-competitive field...

The course did not seem to have a lot of climbing but my Garmin showed that the elevation was comparable to the spring and summer events. It was all gradual climbs and false flats that were easy for 3 laps but very tough after that.

Of course, no-one has mentioned the fact that Emily Batty was riding in the mixed tag team category and pulled off something like 8 sub-30-minute laps, and was pure class out on the course. She passed my three times over the course of the day and each time I tried to hold her wheel. Very unsuccessfully...

I had a overall great day out. Raced 3-4 mix category.

I was left wanting more with that course. Disappointing. It was best summarized by a team-mate. "We are at Hardwood Hills, a world class MTB race facility, and we are riding this crap."

That long section of freshly cut meadow must have been hard on the solos. Especially those rigid or hardtail. Same with the sections of new singletrack we worked it. Unfortunately it wasn't until the latter part of the lap that I felt we got to experience some of the fun trails/racing you can get at Hardwood, I was hoping for more.

Serious, Unglued, beyond the lack of flow, that course had to be way easier than the spring 8 hour, no?

It was a great day. First time for me trying a singlespeed....and a rigid. Of course...had to flat on the very lap I dropped off my camelback full of supplies at my pit for a refill...but that is part of the game...but a half hour of running in carbon shoes was not fun. The meadow shook the hell out of me...and the blisters on my hands (no nasty jokes please...) are there to remind me. Wiggly sucked the life out of the legs.

Otherwise enjoyed the singlespeed experience...may have to do it again...next year...

Spring 8 hour was way tougher, but it's hard to consider any course easy when riding for 8 hours on it on a rigid Singlespeed. And yeah, the meadow sucked balls.

You're right about Emily being a class act for sure. She passed my son a couple times throughout the day, and he said she was very polite. He tried to hold on to her too! Haha.
He asked her for a pic after the race too.

Oh yeah, the Spring 8 hour was possible the hardest in terms of climbs. But yesterday, the rough ride in that meadow with the gradual climbs and false flats did eventually wear us out. But I can understand how team riders don't see it as a tough course. In my pre-ride I was convinced I could manage 14 laps on a good day (injury free). I was wrong.

I had a great day on my bike. Loved the course, could have done with less of that field, but it is what it is. The last few laps really sucked the life out of me. Or perhaps I threw most of my life away over the first dozen, cause they were pretty fast by my standards.
Anyway 2nd place solo SS , 14 laps, and I got to look at Adam F's beautiful True North single speed. And I got to chat quite a bit too.

Well finished DFL in SS solo with 10 laps to my name. Was a good day on the bike. I didn't mind the meadow that much to be honest, it wasn't optimal and smooth by any stretch, but I ride something like that on a regular basis so I didn't really think much of it.

First couple of laps I laid back a bit and tried not to repeat the Summer 8h issue of going out too hard. Settled into a nice routine by lap 4, by lap 5 I was taking 5 minute breaks filling bottles and having some food. The game plan was the Pin, and that's all. I didn't look at the screen all day.

Lap 6 I fired up the iPhone with some tunes, Primus, Beastie Boys, etc. Was a good time riding past some people here and there while listening to some Pauls Boutique.

On the other hand. I hated every inch of Wiggly. Every time I rolled into it I'd die a bit inside. On a geared bike it probably wouldn't be so bad, but by the end of the day it doesn't take much to put me on my feet. I ended up walking it from 6 and on, it was no fun to ride

I probably had enough time to do an 11th lap, but by the time 5pm rolled around I was deep into the hurt locker and there was a hamburger calling me from the BBQ.

The course wasn't 'hard' by any stretch of the word, but it beat the living piss out of my hands and arms by the end of it. Quantity has a quality in this case i guess. There were certain areas that made me think that being on a team woulda let me have a LOT more fun by ripping through and just going all out, but less time on the course.

Though there was a previous comment about "world class XC MTB trail system". I agree. As much as I like riding raw and newly built trail, not as a race. It just screams "hey we need to work this in". Riding the last half of the course vs the first half of it was fun and while hard, rewarded me for good riding. No matter what I did on the first half it just seemed like a slog in some of that single track.

Also, I never took that rock drop though I wanted to, was it difficult? I just didn't feel like ending my day by taking it and not being prepared.

Edit: True story. Emily Batty rides a hovercraft designed to look like a Trek.

Every time I saw that Wiggly sign, I wanted to drop-kick it.
Yup! 1st half wasn't pleasant, but 2nd half was bliss.
About the "Meadow" section, is an 8 hour relay race really the right time to break in new trails?

I've seen organizers do this before, it's fairly common. Considering there were a couple thousand passes through the course, I can understand why they do it. Break in a new trail, quick. However I felt it was a little too extensive on this course.

It wasn't a drop, you could roll it. It wasn't tough, but you had to line it up properly.

If it is on private land it is easier to do this. Any new sections make a few passes with a dirt bike. We did that on a couple of new sections 36 hours before Dan's race in Kingston and you couldn't tell it had been built in the last 48 hours.

This concept of "breaking in" trail actually makes me a little cranky. If you build it right in the first place, it doesn't need any; it's ready to ride immediately. Also, I hate riding soft, un-tamped, machine-built and/or rake and ride trail. Especially now that I've seen what proper hand building can do.

Good times. My triceps were killing me Sunday and I'm on a full suspension bike so I can't fathom how those riding rigid must have felt the next day. I completed 11 laps and had just enough time (would have been close) to do a 12th but knew it wouldn't change my standing as 2nd place was heading into her 13th lap so I called it quits knowing I may have not met the deadline. Very courteous passing with the exception of 1 or 2 who you would think were racing in the Olympics, lol. I actually enjoyed the course with the exception of Wiggly which sucked the life out of me the last few laps.

Not only rigid. Rigid single speed.
    Truly mind blowing indeed...

Sorry Nerdgirl. But if using these allows me to move material and build trail faster I will. While yes these are restricted in public places like Christie. As a Weasel Worker I learned long ago to be open to things like this.

And if the dirt bike helps us...it is a tool we will use.
