    XT M8000 mech - gs or sgs? (2x10 - 11-42t & 40/28)

Setting up a 2x10 wide ratio on a hardtail with:

    - 40/28 crank (SLX),
    - XT M785 FD (has the big ring tooth capacity)

    - 11-42t 10sp cassette (sunrace- 380g)
    - XT M8000 RD (for the 42t cog size)

    - 10 sp XT shifters (or maybe slx front and xtr rear)

    So my calculated capacity = 43 (40-28 plus 42-11).

My question is, can I get away with the medium cage (GS) derailleur, or do I need to use the long cage?

Per Shimano, the GS total capacity is 39t.

I'm used to short/med cage RD's, and prefer the RD be less vulnerable, but would like to be able to use all the gears...

Will the shifting be noticeably slower/poorer with the long cage? (I've never used one before (even on a 12-32, 24/36/48).

    Thanks!
    D.

No, shifting will be the same. You might be able to get away with the medium cage but if it were me I'd probably go for the long cage version.

Thanks JB. I'll go with the long cage.
