    thinking about xt 1x11 ??

I am looking into the xt 1x11 group...
this is for my 29er hardtail that is currently single speed, my local
rides don't consist of very much of long granny gear type climbs ,
and I am pretty strong climber..but some amount of riding
forest service roads to connect trails and some road riding....

so I am thinking maybe 34 chain ring with the 11-42 cassette...
I am not looking to go fast but just a reasonable speed on some
of the flats with out to much spiny feel......

I know a double or triple may be better suited for this
type of mixed riding, but I like a simple solid drive train
I hate the idea of front derailleur ......any one with the
1x11 set up who do similar type riding...or your thoughts
    on this in general Thanks

I am using a mix of XT/XTR on my trail oriented Ibis Mojo.

For the cassette I went straight for an hybrid: XT 1140 + One-up 45. The resulting 1145 works perfectly with XT M-8000 derailleur. The standard XT 1142 is not that far at all but there are also rumors that Shimano is bringing to market an 1146 that might be worth the wait Spy Shot: Prototype 11-46 Wide Range Shimano Cassette

For the Chain Ring I am using a Garbaruk oval 30 that I like a lot. I picked 30 because of what I had on my old Mojo C, but the HD3 is even more efficient, the oval seems to help a real lot, and as a result I could easily use a 32. Hardtail coming from single speed ... 34 is probably a very sure bet. When selecting a Chain Ring keep an eye on chain line because it can be a small issue http://forums.mtbr.com/drivetrain-sh...tml?highlight=

Single vs double ... I would go back to double if I was doing some "real" mountain biking and wanted to have more high gears. Instead I am pretty much only doing 2 hours rides in the San Francisco Bay Area, with moderate to small elevations gain. Speed is better where it is now: I am already getting in enough trouble!
