Sunrace 11-40t cassette and Shimano Zee Freeride RD

Has anyone got knowledge on whether or not these two will work together? I have recently bought a Shimano Zee 10 speed Freeride rear derailleur with the intention of going 1x10 speed on a 11-36t XT cassette but then fell victim to the craze that is extender cogs. Since I have found the Sunrace 11-40t Cassette so I'm torn. The Zee cage is small but I've read that some people have successfully used the Zee derailleur with a 40t extender cog, so I just want clarification before wasting money on 11-40t Sunrace cassette as opposed to an XT 11-36t + 40t cog

Why not. It worked great with my 9sp 11-40 put together from Hope T-Rex40 and SRAM 11-32 & 11-34 cogs. Still working great with M9000 & M8000 11s 11-40 cassette.

Hockeys aren't great, replaced mine with Tacx ones having sealed stainless bearings.

Lots of people use them with 42t ext cogs know reason it won't work on an integral cassette.

What model Sunrace are you looking to get, the ms or mx?
Wait whuuut, who did he tell you that!?!?....

So in the end I went:

    Shimano Zee Shadow plus. (34.99)
Shimano XT 10 spd Shifter. (27.99)

Shimano XT 10 spd 11-36 Cassette.
    Shimano XT 10 spd Chain.
    Absolute Black 40T Extender cog.
Absolute Black 13T Lock Ring. (50.00)

Basically I bought the lot apart from the shifter and derailleur from a guy on Pinkbike in mint condition for 50 less than 300 miles old. It did take a little fettling with the B-screw (original used) and Hi\Low adjustments but now I've got them shifting perfect. The only cog you loose is the 11T as the 13T lock ring does its magic.

    Absolute Black 13T Lock Ring:

'There are two ways to fit 40T sprocket to your drivetrain. You can remove the stock 17T sprocket and one spacer from your cassette, then put 40T on the freehub and mount everything else back (except 17T).

OR, by removing 11T sprocket. Second option is a lot better in our opinion, but requires our special lockring to hold 13T sprocket (lockring is available in options).

If you don't know which option would be better for you, then just go for a ride and observe which of these two sprockets (11 & 17) you will miss less. Study shows, around 90% of mtb riders do not use 11T sprocket in terrain.'

The trouble I have with adding an extender and removing the 11t is that you're decreasing the range of the cassette (vs 11-40). What size chainring are you running? It makes sense if you're already at a 30t and limited by crank I suppose.

    Little Gear:
    30/36=0.83
    32/40=0.8

    Big Gear:
    30/11=2.72
    32/13=2.46

go to your LBS. Easy. I just ordered an 11-42, no problem. Should cost under $70 after a 10% "I buy too much stuff" discount.

Don't know about short cage vs.long cage with the Zee, but the only problem I've heard with the shimano derailure is needing a longer B screw with the 42T. Don't know if the 40T cog needs it, but it's a screw. Not hard to find at a hardware store.
