Sunrace 11-34t vs. Shimano 13-34t 7 speed cassette

I was originally considering the Sunrace CSM40 (11,13,15,18,22,28,34) to replace my HG50 type E (12,14,16,18,21,24,28) but Slash suggested the Shimano type K (13,15,17,20,24,29,34) and posed the question if I really need the 11t. I do have 48/38/24 chain rings on 170 cranks so with 26ers its still 95.1 gears inches with the 13t. Compared to 112.4 on the 11t.
So do I need the 11t on a MTB? How often do you really use these ultra high gears on a MTB?
I also like the 29t on the Shi for those steep but not too steep hills. I'm 49 so my legs are not quite the same anymore.
So which route should I go? Suggestions, comments?
    Thanks all!

You won't spin out 38-11 until you are over 25 miles an hour.

Get the Sunrace with the 11t and ditch the big ring or put a bash guard on the bike. Unless you are racing or riding road a bunch, the big ring is pretty much dead weight.

I guess that's goes with the same thinking why some people like the 34t, they can stay on their middle chain wheel longer in a climb or don't even have to shift to granny. So with the 11t I might not use my 48 chain wheel. Good point!

Weight saving? I ride with my two boys. Guess who gets to carry all the gear and stuff?

    Thanks!

On the other hand, its another reason to go with the 13-34, if I'm keeping my 48T.
    Thanks!

Even with your 38 and the 13, you can do 26 mph at a cadence of 100 - easily done. It wasn't that long ago that road bikes came with a 14 small cog.

Found a deal on the HG50 13-34 in black/brown that I couldn't resist! They had a sale on the ef65 shifter/brake combo too! Don't really like silver cogs, so I'm choosing based on the color! LOL!

Thanks for all your help guys!
