Sram GX Eagle Shifting 10 Times

So I was driving myself crazy, trying to setup a GX Eagle Drivetrain with Sunrace Cassette. I could not get it to shift consistently. Then I counted the shifts. The shifter is only shifting 10 times, not 11. I counted multiple times to make sure. The shifter has the Eagle logo on the thumb lever, and the box is labeled correctly, so it should be the correct shifter as far as I can tell. Has anybody had this happen before? Could I have done something wrong during setup or does it sound like a defective shifter?

10 clicks equals 11 gears (no click for the first one) is that how you counted them?

Correct. It shifts 10 times. So "11 gears." It basically just skips a random gear every time I shift through, so it still makes it from the 1st gear to last, and vice versa.

Sounds like your cable tension is too loose

Does it click 11 times with the cable unhooked?

N-1. There's always one less click than the number of gears.

So I took the shift cable off the derailleur and physically pulled on it. I get all 11 shifts.

After looking closer almost everytime I shift through (big to small), it skips the 11 cog. I tried adding more cable tension, but then it won't shift into the 12th cog. Can't seem to figure it out. If I rememdy one issue, I cause another.

Setting up a drivetrain is a systematic process. If you're systematic about it, it's easy to figure out where the problem arises and that will lead you to the solution pretty quickly.

Start here. There are no actual fixes, but it points to a lot of other content to address various things related to drivetrain setup and troubleshooting.

Yeah the Park tutorials are pretty good, google the one for rear derailleur adjustments and it will walk you through step by step.

Sounds to me like yet another cable restriction issue but I'd check the hanger alignment first.

    First: check hanger/cage alignment
    Second: check limit screws adjustment
    Third: dial in cable tension

    Have you checked hanger alignment?
How old is the shifter cable and housing?

Bad hanger alignment can affect limit screw adjustments. If you're going to check the derailleur hanger alignment (and I think that's best) you might as well do it first.

Bad hanger alignment was the cause. Thanks for the help guys. Everything worked fine with 10sp setup, didn't even cross my mind that hanger would be out of alignment. Guess these 12sp drivetrains require more attention to detail. I was able to eyeball the alignment for the time being, though I think I'm gonna order the tool to really dial it in and for future use.

Sram GX Eagle Shifting 10 Times

Watch this video for the correct Eagle procedures:

Itís NOT the same as 11spd. If it doesnít shift perfectly and sound quiet through all the gears, get your hanger straightened. Even new hangers arenít straight sometimes.

Yeah, that's more logical. And it sounds like the hanger was his problem!

Hi, the Park hanger alignment tool is good. Be gentle pushing or pulling to bend (align) the hanger -- you have a lot of torque with the long arm. Always have an extra hanger on hand. It might be a good idea to get a new hanger before using the tool to bend the old one. And then, after bendiing the old hanger, use it for your spare and put the new one on.
