    Short or long cage derailleur?

I have a 48-38-28 triple crank with a 25-12 cassette. I need to buy a replacement 9-speed rear derailleur, but I am not sure if I need a short or long cage. The specs for each are below. Looking at the numbers, it would seem that I could use either one, but would appreciate confirmation from a more experienced person.

Model Number : Shimano SORA RD-3500-SS
    Cassette Compatibility : 9
    Maximum Sprocket : 32T / 14T
    Minimum Sprocket : 25T / 11T
    Maximum Front Difference : 16T
    Total Capacity : 37T

Model Number : Shimano SORA RD-3500-GS
    Cassette Compatibility : 9
    Maximum Sprocket : 32T / 14T
    Minimum Sprocket : 25T / 11T
    Maximum Front Difference : 20T
    Total Capacity : 41T

You're running a 20T chain ring difference so, based on the information you provided, you need the long cage. It appears the short cage would otherwise work, but I don't know that I would install something that the mfg didn't spec for. What came off the bike?

I currently have a long cage. It makes sense now. After counting teeth on two bikes I glossed over the max front difference spec. You have been helpful. Thanks.

No worries. These things get easier to figure out with experience. You're going to find yourself getting a lot of that pretty quickly in this sport/hobby.
