New question here. Shimano XT M8000 Compatability

I would like to upgrade my current bike to a XT m8000 Groupset.

I'm currently using a Shimano SLX FC-M675 crank. Will this crank work with a XT M8000 groupset?

    Thanks

No problem, lots of rings available.
I got some bad ideas in my head.

My current SLX crank has 38x24 rings. The folks at Chainreaction were telling me only an XT m8000 crankset would work with that groupset. Probably trying to get me to purchase one.

I'm sure it you talked to some customer service rep that doesn't have a clue and the safe thing to say was you needed the XT crankset. Ridiculous. Try a real bike shop...

Shimano is very particular about their drivetrains and shifting. If you aren't using Shimano's 11-sp chainrings, the ramps and pins won't perfectly match the shape of the chain's outer plates. There's a good chance it won't shift "Shimano-perfect", hence Shimano likely saying that it's incompatible. You can't put M8000 chainrings on a 104BCD crank, hence only the M8000 or M9000 cranks are "compatible".

That said, anyone who says it won't work is spouting hogwash. Your chainrings and crank will work just fine.

The only thing you need to double-check is that your rear derailleur has enough chain capacity (you need a long-cage SGS derailleur) and to add 1 more link than you would for an 10sp chain when you size your new 11sp chain with an M8000/9000 rear derailleur.
