Shimano LX FC-M582 crankset convert to 2-speed 44/28?

Here's what I want to do--it's actually for a road bike but I think MTBR is a better forum for this:

I want to use a Shimano LX FC-M582 MTB crankset as a double with 44/28. It is designed as a 9 speed triple (44-32-22) with external bearing BB. The chainline is too far out (~53mm) if I run this as a double with the 44 outer and 32 tooth middle ring. So the plan would be to mount the 44 tooth ring as the middle ring with no large ring or bash guard (would need single speed chainring bolts), and then mount a 28 tooth 64 mm BCD inner ring (which I would need to buy, probably a 10 speed ring). There is enough clearance on the frame. I believe the chainline would be ~48 mm, which is still probably a little far out but is OK. I would use a 9 speed chain. The current derailleur is an old XT FD-M737, which was from the 8 speed era and designed to work with a 44-32-22 triple crankset.

Ideally all I would need to buy would be the chainring bolts, the 28t inner ring, and the 9 speed chain.

Will this work? Will I have problems if the 28t inner ring is a 10 speed ring? Do I have to be worried about the XT and SLX inner rings that supposedly work only with a specific large ring?

    Thanks for your help.

I just converted an LX M580 crank (Hollowtech II) to 2x9.
However, have smaller gearing: kept the 22T on the granny gear and changed middle ring to 34T (instead of 32T).
16T difference between the 2 rings in inner and middle position seems like a lot and might pose a problem for your FD.
You should also check where the the chain will be positioned vs. your FD (that has more space where the chain should be in the traditional 22-32-44 setup).
