replacing jockey wheel on x9 derailleur - does the year/model matter?

I have the stock x9 rear derailleur on my 2011 specialized pitch pro, the lower pulley wheel broke some of the plastic teeth off.

Can I buy any sram X# pulley wheel or do I need the 2011 X9 ?

You need the correct one. The old style is quite a bit different than the new.

There are at least three variations, though they are easy to tell apart. Given the year of the bike, and they fact that this model fails often, I would guess you need 11.7515.038.000. They are easily identified by the cutouts.

I replaced my plastic wheels on my x9 with aluminum ones. Just broke one though, when my derailleur went into the wheel. A lot of stuff broke. I was able to bend the jockey wheel back enough to ride out. Cant do that with a plastic one.
