Ever swap out a $45 BB with a $100 to find they both use the same bearings?

    Doh

Well it was a different crank and spindle diameter too.

Not quite, but after being shipped $100 bb with dry bearings I open up all of them and check for grease.

You can get $20 Shimano HTII BBs and there is nothing wrong with them.
All it is is an interface to the frame to hold the bearings. Those bearings are not that expensive either.

Not sure what the $45 BB was doing for you better than the $20 type, or what you expected from the $100 BB.

The $100 BB may be 2 g lighter and will look a bit more shiny.

The $45 BB came with the bike and the $100 is for a different spindle and is shiny. The bearing manufacturer and level were the same.

You're right..the $20 would have been just fine.

A cheap bearing properly maintained (regular clean, inspect and grease) I suspect will last longer than an expensive bearing that have been ignored and not maintained.
