    Converting my Talon 3x9 11-34 to 1x10/11 - 11-46/50

    Hi all,

This has probably been addressed ad nauseum somewhere else, and I did search first (all over the net and here), but can't find the answers I need. If so, feel free to send me there :-)

I want to convert my Talon 4 3x9 to 1x10 11-46/50 or a 1x11 11-50. For the life of me I cannot figure out which rear derailleur to use. I'd like to keep the whole project under $200, which pretty much rules out a $110 stx or xt rd and $70 shifter. I don't care if its SRAM or Shimano rd and shifter (I know they have to be in the same brand), and I'll probably go with a 10 spd or 11 spd Sunrace 11-46 or 50, and 50-50 32/34/36t NW.

It looks like 10 spd would be best for cost, but 11 spd would be preferred if it's cheap enough.

I have a Shimano 9spd hub, so I've read a 10 or 11 spd Sunrace, Shimano or SRAM cog should fit?

So is there a reasonably priced RD that I should be looking at that will work with a 46 or 50t cog with or without a goat link or longer b screw?

My goal is to stay under 21 gear inches low and over 80 high. I've ridden various ring combinations on my bike, and determined 21gi is as high as I want to go for low gear, for the sake of my old knees (preferably 19.7 to 20.5), and I want to be able to cruise around 20 mph at a normal cadence. On my road bike I typically run 12-15 mph avg riding to work at 0 dark hundred, and 18-25 mph going home in the afternoon. On my Talon, 32 x 11-46 or 34 x 11-50 will get me close to that. With an 11-50 cog I could even go to 36 up front. 32/34 x 11-42 will not get the range I need. I don't mind to buy used mech and shifter, but want to stay with new for the cassette/chain/chainring.

Sorry for the long post, I've looked at specs and charts and gear calculators until my head hurts. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Simple. Go to Competitive Cyclist/Jenson/choose your site, start in components, drill down and refine your searches for each desired components (i.e. nw chaining,cr bolts, chain, shifter,rr der, cassette)refine pricing from "lowest to highest" in the tabs and start a shopping cart. Or just scratch it down on a piece of paper.
Shimano slx/xt 11 spd can run up to a 50t cassette, SRAM NX only to 46. Not sure where you got your $$ for the two items, I saw rr D's for less than $60, shifters less than $30. Rings will be ~$40-45, chains -$20. NX cassettes ~$60, Box/SunRace $80-90.

Have you looked at upgrade kits? That means RD, cassette, chain, shifter.

An SLX M7000 upgrade kit with an 11-46 costs around $170-180. After that you just need a narrow wide chainring if you have a suitable crankset. I wouldn't go 10spd.

    (I'm in the EU, sorry)

JMac is right tho, go to a good online shop and just keep looking at those spec sheets and gear calculators. We can't do anything else either.

10-11 speed mountain cassettes will fit on your freehub, you could even go 12spd.

Thank you, that's exactly what I was needing. I couldn't find that info online, just the standard 3x tooth capacities.

So this would be my proposed setup.

    Sunrace 11-46 10 spd cassette
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sunrace-MS3...r=572349667842

SLX M675 Shadow Long Cage RD

    SLX M670B Shifter

KMC 10 spd chain 116 link
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/KMC-X10-93-...s/272853072763

Absolute Black Oval 34t or 36t Chainring
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Absolute-Bl...d/292908592695

    Is this a viable setup?

If it will work, it gives me all the performance marks I want/need, and it fits my budget too, squeaking in at about $196. And I'm sure I could shop around and get some of the parts cheaper, ebay was just an easy place to collate everything. I enjoyed the oval chainring on my old Trek, but I could save another $10 or so by going with a round Raceface or Fifty-Fifty chainring.

I would love to go 11spd or 12 spd 11-50, but I can't seem to spec it under $250, much less $200. I'll keep trying though, maybe I can sell some blood LOL. I also thought about 2x10/11/12 but I figure if I'm going to be front shifting, I might as well ride my 24/32/42 x 11-34 setup until it falls off and then decide. But I'd really rather just swap it out now though lol.

Overall I'm looking at spending almost $350 (+ a new fork eventually) on a bike that sells for about $250 used, but my girlfriend picked up for $15 in excellent condition!

That would be awesome, but it's over my budget by about $50 us... :-(

That SLX set looks nice, I think it's basically what I specced above. I'll definitely explore that option too. :-)

I'll definitely do some more shopping now that I have a better idea exactly what I need mech-wise. :-) Thanks!

At first glance saying the $50 is putting you way over budget sounds pretty petty but considering that's "25%" over your budget it is admirable!👍 Good luck. By the way I didn't see what 3x crank you're looking to convert, hopefully it is a common style bcd that you can get a ring for!😀
