Convert 3X10 XT Cranks to 2X10?

Pretty simple question I think, my buddy is buying a bike with an XT (I think M770 or M780) 3X10 crankset that has been converted by the owner to 1X10, and he no longer has the parts to swap back.

1X10 isn't enough range for him, so one option is to swap back to multiple front rings. I can get my hands on a front mech for next to nothing, but it's 2X10. Is it possible to run the 3X cranks as 2X using a 2X front derailleur?

Nope. Traditionally, and I think it's still the better way, that's how it was done.

My nicer bike has a 22 in the small ring position, a 36 in the middle position, and a bash guard in the outer position.

Im sorry, i think my question was confusing. I want to convert 3X cranks to 2X using the middle 104 bcd and the 64 bcd for the two chainrings. Will that work?

Huh. I totally misread the question phrase.

It's really not a big deal. Just read "yup" where I wrote "nope."

    Haha! Too funny.

I do this all the time. I do it with a 3 speed shifter and derailleur and just limit the derailleur.

Yeah 2x der won't play nice on the 3x crankset chain lines. Use a 3x der or pickup a bargin 2x crankset to go along with your bargain der.
Wait whuuut, who did he tell you that!?!?....
