    cassette for 03 Stumpy

I purchased this cassette on the advice of a different bike shop who was out of stock

    https://www.benscycle.com/shimano-de...70_402/product

and my LBS says it won't work on my hub but I didn't fully understand why. Something about the freewheel not having enough space or something, but don't quote me in that. They said I'd have to settle for a "lower end cassette" if I want to replace it. Fortunately mine still has some life left in it.

So how do I know which ones will work if bike shops don't even know?

Good question. I used the 11-34 version of that cassette on my own 03 Stumpjumper FSR.

Probably a different hub on the FSR, but that still seems odd...but not impossible

I dunno...whatever Specialized OEM hub it came with. After a few years, I put a Mavic wheelset on it. But it doesn't really matter. When it comes to mtb cassettes, the Shimano HG freehub body didn't change at all from what 7 or 8spd through 11spd. Shimano DID change that freehub body for 11spd road, but that's irrelevant to this discussion unless the shop guy was confused.

Hmmm. Basically, anything "9 speed" should work.

Do you have a picture of what you have now?

The cassette you bought should work as far as I can tell.

Worked fine at a different bike shop. There are little nubs on the back of the new cassette that apparently the older one didn't have. They just had to take off the dork disc. I was going to get that ugly thing off of there anyway.

1st shop isn't very impressive are they... foiled by a dork disk. Wow.

Hopefully they didn't try to charge you.

Oh yes they did! Try, that is. But they didn't find me to be a very compliant fool. I didn't give them a cent.
