Alternate double crankset to SRAM XX?

Hey all - I'm unsure if this is the right section of the forum but I'm interested in some opinions.

I'm building up a 2x9 or 2x10 Frankenbike of sorts and as a high school student, I really have no cash left. So, I'm looking for a tried-and-true or other alternate crankset to the SRAM XX carbon. Any road cranksets that work particularly well? Maybe some retro or weird '90s crankset or something.

I rarely use all three rings on a standard crank and really have zero need for a bashguard, so I'm open to "DIY" or retrofitted double stuff. Something light, but not fragile on the trail, and most importantly, something that won't cost me more than the rest of my bike combined.

if you're looking for the cheapest option, then don't bother looking for a new crankset - just remove one of your rings. You may not need a bash, but if you're removing the big ring, you could put a bash in its place to stop the chain falling off to the outside.

Now is probably not the time to get any Race Face product...unless you don't want any service

OP...check out the SRAM S1400 crankset
