    1x8 conversion derailleur help please

to go along with my 1x9 conversion for my 11yo, working on a 1x8 conversion for my 9 yo. again going the econ route until they take to it. got an '05 kona stinky jr, i know, it's a dh bike and heavy. i swapped out the shock and fork and going 1x8 will save a little weight. making the kid work is good for him.

i've got a 30t narrow wide chain ring and an 11-40 8spd cassette fitted. it will index to each cog, but definitely does not run smoothly. i've got the b-screw maxed and there is a bit of interference between the guide pulleys and the cogs.

the current shifter/derailleur combo is a shimano acera from that era, original to the bike. so a couple of questions,

    1) any insight on a derailleur that would be compatible with that shifter and cassette would be great. if i have to change both shifter and derailleur, no big deal.
    2) would a 10 spd chain be advised?

You probably just need to adjust the chain length or maybe add a Wolf Tooth RoadLink to get it to work smoothly with the big cassette.

Most narrow-wide rings want at least a 10-speed chain.

thanks. i do have a 10 spd chain on the way.

i'm green to the new mtb tech. it looks like the wolf tooth roadlink is a derailleur hangar? this i would assume would move the derailleur further from the cassette and reduce interference between the cassette and derailleur pulleys?

It's a derailleur hanger extension. It bolts into your existing derailleur hanger to lengthen it, and does get the pulleys further away from the cogs. Here's a couple of mine - the first is a 1x10 11-46, and the second is a 1x9 11-40. If you zoom in you can make out the wolf and goat head logos- but both are the RoadLink version of the GoatLink. The WolfTooth site explains which one will work best with your setup- I think it had to do with SRAM v. Shimano.

SunRace makes a decent one too - SP570. I've used both Wolftooth and SunRace.
