    1x10 to1x11 via M8000 Cassette

I currently have a SRAM x9 1x10 11-42 (OneUp) setup on my bike with a RaceFace Narrow-Wide chainring. Since the M8000 cassette claims to fit 10-speed freehubs, I should be able to buy the cassette, a SRAM X1 11speed shifter, a 11-speed chain and call it a day, right? I like the 11-42 okay, but having an extra gear to smooth things out would be nice.

Since both the X1 and X9 are exact actuation they should be compatible. The only incompatibility I could see is the 10-speed pulleys on the rear derailleur with the 11-speed chain.

Never thought of it that way. Not sure the 10sp X9 has enough range?

Yes, you are correct. That is pretty much how I went XTR 1x11. Shifter, cassette, and chain.

I would be interested to know if this works. My "guess" is there is a reason Sram Engineers went through all that hassle to create a totally different type of der for 11sp. But it could have also been from a marketing standpoint too.

Not totally different but the way it pivots is different for 10 vs 11spd... not to say that it won't work, just not ideal.

Additionally, the SRAM 1x stuff is not compatible with 2x setups, as the derailleur only moves horizontally and cannot accommodate the difference in chainring sizes that comes with a 2x setup changing gears.
