    1x10 setup with a 40 or 42t

Who makes this setup? How well does it work? Do you need a clutch derailleur or a regular 10 speed? I have a shimano xt. Don't want to buy a clutch derailleur to run a 1x11 setup

You will want a clutch RD if you run a single ring up front. I have a goat link and a 40T and a 42T....change it out depending on where I ride. Then instead of using an after market 16T cog I use a Shimano XT M771 10-Speed 16t 4th position Cassette Cog......shifting it much better then the aftermarket 16T

    All you need is:

    11-42 cassette - https://www.bikeman.com/BTI-UQ4494.html see this thread discussion http://forums.mtbr.com/drivetrain-sh...ge-962391.html

Narrow wide chainring - Oneup 104 BCD Narrow Wide Chainring > Components > Drivetrain > Chainrings | Jenson USA (likely 30 or 32 tooth ideal if you ride hills) lots of options depending on your bcd.

Longer B-Tension screw - Wolf Tooth 25 MM B Screw > Components > Drivetrain > Misc. Rear Derailleur Parts | Jenson USA

IME stock Shimano rear derailleurs do not like it it when cranked beyond the 36T. The shifting in the small cogs will be poor. For sanity's sake...I'd just get the 11sp XT derailleur. It'll work with your 10sp shifter.

I'm using an e thirteen 42t rear cog on my 1x10 setup. With my medium cage sram gx rear dérailleur, it shifts like butter into the 42t cog. Didn't use the longer b screw the e thirteen cog came with either. Just the stock b screw.

I swapping to a Praxis 11-40 cassette and from a 2x (24/38) to a 1x 32T (RaceFace). Riding with the 1x on the stock 11-36 cassette feels great but I know I'm going to need that 40T eventually. I'm waiting for the Praxis cassette and AB 30T oval ring to come in to complete the change. Still using my stock X9 10psd shifter.
