10 speed crank with 9 speed cassette and RD?

I am trying to convert a 3x9 system into 1x9 by getting new crankset and 11-40T cassette. The problem is that there are not a lot of options for a single chainring 9-speed cranksets. Most of the ones within my budget are 10-speed. Would that still work with a 9-speed cassette? My RD is Shimano Deore XT.

This is a budget conversion so that's why I am trying to keep the RD, chain and shifter.

Yes it will work just fine. I used a 10 speed triple on my 9 speed for a while before I made the switch to 1x11.
Change begins by doing something different.

Yes, any crank will work if you're going to a 1x setup. My question to you is, what's wrong with your current cranks that you don't just use them? All you have to do is remove the inner and outer rings and then install the size middle ring you want, you could even use back your old middle ring if it's the right size and not worn out, but I'd highly suggest getting a new Narrow/Wide ring to help retain the chain.
One day your life will flash before your eyes, will it be worth watching??

    Thanks guys.

I can't just remove the chainrings as the current crankset has a non-removable triple chainrings. I have to get a whole new crankset.
