New question here. turning the red pad adjuster on CODES

the red adjuster knob on my Codes feels "notchy" at best when turning.
I can tell it works because you can feel the difference when pulling the lever.
What would cause the inconsistent turning?
I never tightened (or loosened) the knob before and I remember it being much smoother in the past.
Is this something that requires removal and a shot of grease?

is it straight forward to remove the knob and clean?
I mean, are there any tiny parts that are going to spill out all over my basement floor if I mess with it?
If not, I'll give it a shot.

    thanks.
