    Kamikaze Bike Games 2013

    I wonder why Mammoth didn't get a better turnout for the inaugural Kamikaze Bike Games? The courses were great, the weather was perfect, and Mammoth is awesome. I'm sure happy that I went. .Kamikaze Tandem race run 2013 (stoker view) - YouTube

    It's 4+ hours away from civilization, it was late in the season, the kids are back in school, it's "expensive" to stay in town and ride the park, the Kamikaze was on Friday, Mammoth Mountain and Mammoth the town are mediocre marketers at best, etc etc.
    It will take some time to spread the word about how good things are now and will be in the future.
    Friday traffic was light.
    The Century got a good turnout, but that was an existing event that just got incorporated in to the games.
    Mammoth needs an enduro or DH series that starts earlier in the season and culminates with the finals at the Kamikaze Games.

    Myself and others were absolutely blown away with how poorly marketed this was. It was barely mentioned on their website or Facebook page even until just one or two days before. You'd think they would have been posting trail updates and other hype CONSTANTLY the entire month leading up to it.

    A race series would be good. If they would just invest a little more in the park it would be very easy to market even modest trail improvements or new trails.

    The race has been on their website all summer. Hell, they made a website dedicated entirely to this race. I had the race flyer my desktop background for over a month prior to the race. I don't know how you wouldn't have heard of it, although I knew about it for so long I don't even remember how I first heard about it.

    Mammoth put more energy, time, and money into this race than I've ever seen at a downhill mountain bike event outside of Sea Otter (is that really downhill though???). Props to them, awesome job, looking forward to next year!

    Maybe the smoke kept some people from coming up? Didn't seem like it was marketed at all until very late, although I think I did see a magazine ad somewhere about it. Either way I think the coverage was great exposure for the park.

    Second year, and still don't see it mentioned on their bike park page yet! Mammoth Mountain Bike Park | Official Site

    Yeah great, that website is wonderful for people like us who already know about it and are searching for it. I WANT mammoth to succeed. I love that place. They just need to get people who don't suck at their job to run things.

    I thought the Legends of the Kamikaze was a cool concept. This year they should try to have atleast 1 of the old school Kamikaze legends in the race. The event would have alot more marketability if it had the Biggest names from the early days like, Tomac, Rockwell, Giove racing the event.

    It might be an OK event to participate in... but as a spectator it is horrible. I went up with 3 other buddies and we all agreed... we won't do it again next year. The majority of the trails on the mountain are closed Friday and Saturday. None of the events started or finished when the schedule indicated they would. The Best Trick guys got booted from Saturday evening to Sunday morning... with rain in the sky and no spectators on the ground. The only beer you could buy at Canyon was Sierra Nevada (sponsor) and the guy cooking the burgers must have been in a hurry because each one was raw in the middle. Basically as an event I thought it was a joke. The head to head Slalom and Speed / Style was fun to watch but it wasn't worth the expense or hassle.

    Flow = Closed
    Pipeline = Closed
    Brake Through = Closed
    Bullet = Closed
    DC-10 = Closed
    Kamikaze = Closed

    If you want to stand or sit around and watch a limited number of racers go by it might be the event for you. If you plan on riding the mountain during the event I'd say don't bother.

    Aloha

    Edit- It is still Mammoth and we had a great time regardless of the event.

    it was actually longer on website but very hidden....shame on Mammoth...because they could really promote it as Kamikaze then Red Bull Rampage Bike week (take 8 days off for an awesome bike adventure)

    I've been there many times in the '90s for the Mammoth Motocross. I really like the little town feel to it. Not so douchey as 'fancy' places like Park City. Sure, you lose out on some creature comforts, but who cares about that when there's dirt to be ridden?

    I don't know how it was promoted, so I have no comment there. But my brother raced (and completely crushed) the 19-29 XC class and said it was the most fun race course he's ever done. Funneled them down Shotgun, which is some pretty rough stuff compared to the average xc course. All the other courses looked very well done too. That rock garden in the DH was almost rivaling Barney Rubble at DV.

    I was also just informed yesterday that next year's XC and Enduro nationals that were going to be held in Bend, Oregon have been moved to Mammoth. Looks like I may be heading home to my Sierras!

    I have to agree that you don't want to go to Mammoth during the event to ride and not race. They did a very poor job of identifying closed trails (two riders were on the course and in the line during my Kami stage two race run) and even left some marked as closed the day after they were used. Despite all of that, it is an awesome place to race and I am already looking forward to next year.

    I went to Mammoth for the first time this year. It was...ok I guess. A lot of their trails were closed and it there wasn't even an event. I'm told that Mammoth is trying to take a step back from the hardcore dh scene because 1) dh folk don't bring as much money as families with a higher income just wanting to ride bikes on trails 2) Trail maintenance and liability is on the resort, and they don't want to put more effort into keeping them to standard. Erosion is a huge issue there. 3) It looks like they are going to indefinitely close/decomission some of the trails. I'll maybe give them another try next season but if it's anything like my experience this year then I'm never heading that way again.
