Just to clarify, a Specialized Demo? As in a Demo 8 their race bike? Yeah it would work as a race bike.

If you mean the Demo 7 that is more FR, it would still be fine in a race. I've seen guys race DH on a Nomad and do fine.

There were kids at Sea Otter racing DH on walmart bikes...

My buddy rocks a demo 9 pro and finishes very well, be warned they are heavy frames.

Personally my next DH bike will probably be a light 7" front and rear setup

The first generation of Demo's were a little heavy and were probably more suited towards freeride but with the new demo 8 frames they're considerably lighter and a little more nimble. My 08' demo is decked out pretty well and it tips the scale right at 40lbs.

The main reason I think there is a lot of question as to whether or not the Demo is a good race bike is because Specialized does very little to support a DH racing team so you don't see any of the top pros riding them, just a thought I guess.

Go with what feels good to you and that's a good race bike in my opinion.

I've taken a few race runs on my Demo 9. Lotta fun and completely adequate, but they are a little bulky and not the most nimble.... I'd say less than ideal for racing, but not out of the question by any means.
