(This happened while I was out of town on riding trip so I only heard about it this weekend.)

Cypress Mountain Announces Mountain Bike Park to open July 2005

The rumblings have been loud and persistent and now it's been made official; Cypress Mountain, right here on the North Shore, will open for lift-accessed mountain biking next year. The current plan is to have four trails that will serve all ability levels. There are two other ski areas on the North Shore and those of us who ride here have been wondering for years if anyone was going to step up. Grouse and Seymour have yet to move but as is often the case our neighbours to the south are leading the charge.

Cypress is owned by Boyne resorts, a US firm which owns seven resorts including Crystal Mountain in Washington State and Big Sky in Montana. Apparently a member of the ownership group (Boyne is family owned) took a trip to Whistler and was advised against riding the trails on the mountain because of his lack of experience. Because of this the resort plans to ensure there are trails for all riders - including complete beginners.

Just last week a permit was issued that should allow trail construction to begin immediately. Cypress has been talking to a very prominent North Shore trailbuilder about doing the digging on the mountain. Nothing has been finalized but keep your fingers crossed - it could be fantastic news for riders.

Cypress officials have been talking to the powers that be at Whistler who have been very helpful. Whistler feels that more players will be good for mountain biking in general. A lot of players in this industry could learn from Whistler's lead - well done.

Here is what Cypress has to say about the project (no mention why it's not called Cypress Bowl any more though).

    (Press Release Aug 20th, 2004)
West Vancouver, Canada – Cypress Mountain would like to congratulate the organizers of The North Shore Credit Union World Mountain Bike Festival and Conference on staging a fantastic event, and demonstrating why the North Shore is respected and treasured by mountain bikers everywhere.

In keeping with this standard, Cypress Mountain is pleased to announce plans to develop a Mountain Bike Park on the north face of Black Mountain, offering chairlift access to mountain bikers beginning next year. Cypress Mountain hopes to have all approvals in place to commence construction this fall on the trail network in order to be ready for an opening date of July 1, 2005.

Initially, two-wheeled riders of all skill levels will find thrills on ten kilometers of trails, featuring low impact designs using indigenous wood, stone, fallen trees, ladder bridges and other mitigative trail construction methods.

The ride up Cypress Mountain is sure to provide mountain bikers with just as many memories as the ride down. With exclusive access to our Eagle Express High Speed Quad Chair, loading will be fast and easy, allowing riders to sit back, relax, and enjoy panoramic views of Vancouver, Howe Sound, the Lions, and the Coast Mountains. After conquering the trails, riders can pause for refreshments at our restaurant and pub.

yeah, I figure it is Digger as well with the subtle hint:

"Cypress has been talking to a very prominent North Shore trailbuilder about doing the digging on the mountain"

    Hope it happens.
