You only need the biggest ring if you like to slash your legs open.

I removed my big ring and plan to replace the middle 32t with a bigger one 36t to get more range. I have had no problem using the same front derailleur, you can just adjust it or remember to not shift to the big ring!
I grabed a BBG bash guard to keep weight down and never miss the big ring.

See BBG bash guards. They make a 44t 104BCD bash to fit over your 44t big ring (or whatever size is your ring).

    chain ring Q

Hello - This may be a dumb Q but am wondering if 10 speed is same as 2x8? Trying to figure out what bracket/crankset to buy and if it all has to be compatible w/ front derailleur, etc? Building a bike for the first time. I want just a middle and small ring, have never used the big ring. Can anyone recommend an affordable bashguard/crankset/bottom bracket combo? Just bought a '12 Nomad frame...

hard to go too wrong. i would buy a triple and a bash and swap the bash for the big ring. any external shimano or sram gxp will work in your frame.

Thanks! Also: If you know ... why would I need spacers for the bb?

shimano type external systems use spacers to accomadate for different bb shell widths but sram does not. either way just follow the instructions that come with your cranks and it will be easy peasy to set up. *you dont have to buy spacers, if they are needed they will come with the whole kit.
