Will he be running gears or single-speed? Something important to consider.

demo'd a cowan for a day and I am gonna get one. I really really liked it. very light feeling in the back half. the geometry was pretty good. didnt manual super well, but i only had about 2 hours of total ride time on it, so with a little practice that could easily be over come. Also the one i rode was an out of the box complete bike. only difference was I put my rear wheel on it so as to keep from f-ing it up too bad. The bike is super stiff. It definately has the harsh ride of an aluminum frame, but on the good side its super agile and responsive. cant speak for the steel head, other than the fact that I dont like azonic hard tails. As for the gyro tabs, i wish it didnt come with them. Stupid marketing tactic. The Cowan definately fits the bill for the riding your friend is gonna do. Cant wait till i can get mine. cant wait.

In that case, the Cowan might be a better choice, gears with horizontal dropouts is less than ideal.
