    Avid breaks?? simple explanation!

So i was wondering if i have this right....

With avid calipers if you set the caliper so the rotor is directly in the centre of the caliper, then the pads will self ajust after a few breakings??

At the moment my pads are a bit lopsided ie one piston is in while the other is out. so to sort this i just thought. centre the caliper to the rotor and the pads will reajust. because at the moment they are rubbing!!!

    Any advice please

I am asuming these are hydros.

Loosen the bolts that hold the caliper, sqeeze the lever, tighten the caliper back down. Sometimes when tighening the caliper the caliper turns a little on the adapter. To avoid this lightley tighten one side then the other and go back and forth between the two bolts untill they are snug. The caliper should be square to the rotor and the rotor should be centerd.

"Loosen the bolts that hold the caliper, sqeeze the lever, tighten the caliper back down."

I know that it's widely accepted, but this is not necessarily sound advice. If one piston moves at a different rate to the other, the caliper will not be positioned centrally over the rotor and you will end up with problems like poor brake performance, uneven pad wear, brake noise and vibrations. The only way to guarantee alignment is to remove the pads, loosen the caliper bolts, align the caliper visually or use feeler gauges, then tighten the caliper bolts back up again, each a little at a time to prevent the caliper shifting under torque from your wrench.

Steve thats what i was thinking. however. in my case the pistons are already uneven but the pads are fine. removing them i would most likely wrek them. so i was wondering if with the caliper centered visualy to the rotor like you sid the pistons would even out after a few breaks or should i just push the pistons back in and start from scatch again?? just a wait of pads is all?
    thanks

You've got it. If the pistons don't extend equally, you can easily manipulate them to do so. Having the caliper perfectly true to the rotor is a fundamental part of set-up that, unfortunately, the CPS just doesn't address properly. Check out this video from Hope...

Oh, and by the way, it's brakes, not "breaks".

mountain bikers are becoming more stupid by the post these days.

BRAKES are on your bicylce. Brakes are what slow you down. If you crash and BREAK your BRAKE lever off your BRAKES are BROKEN.

I have been seeing tons of these mistakes in the past few days. No one knows the difference between there, they're, thier, know, no, brake, break and on and on.

Im pretty stupid and I even know this stuff

    Two questions:

    1) What's a bicylce?

    2) Who the f*ck are you anyway?

"YES!!! and the pedal, petal, peddle"

Look, the guy made a couple of mistakes in an otherwise very well-expressed posting. If anyone has an issue with genuinely badly written posts (of which, yes, there are numerous), could I suggest a new thread in General Discussion or Site Feedback/Issues where, without getting personal, you can all b*tch and whine to your heart's content?

If your Avid breaks, go get some Shimano brakes.

maybe they're building up two frames?

Seriously though, nothing against the OP, just some good-natured ribbing on my part

I do like the idea of using some business cards between pad and rotor as 'space-holders' while centering/aligning. Worked like a charm for me.

Wow there was me thinking most bikers are cool guys. at least for the most part we are. theres always an ashole or two! (boogenman) hope i spelt that wright!

Anyway i am from spain originaly although i reside in glasgow have done for a fair few years now so forgive my spelling.

Back to the breaks. the video wasnt the most clear buy i sorteb it out now.
by pushing only the spring or what ever you call it that keeps the pads apart in so it lost its spingness. i managed to get the pads out with out damaging them then pushed the pistons back in, opened the spring thing up again and put the hole thing together like new

thanks for all the help thoght steve

    happy ridi'n

    sorry for the spelling loL!

Oooh...pissed that he got beaten at his own game so he has to resort to 8th grade insults...you must be GOD at the school cafeteria table!!! I wish I was as cool as you!!!

And without admitting, there's nothing wrong with being gay. You know that little group called the Nazis? If you don't, suffice it to say that they killed a whole bunch of people just because they were Jewish or another "unpure" race or because they were gay, among other reasons. Do you want to be just like them?

Who has more of a life? The "forum junkie" who doesn't try to be totally different online than in real life, or the loser who has nothing better to do in life than flame bait on forums and criticize people's spelling...I bet you don't do that in real life with real people...

I love people with an e-personality like you...so funny.

"You're" is a contraction of 'you are', so your sentence is nonsense. And quite ironic, too.
