Advantages of a direct mount stem?

I'm in the process of getting a new bike and can't seem to decide if I want to go direct mount or not. I've heard about how a direct mount can sometimes twist stanchions or break, but at the same time I want the lower height they offer. So what's everybody's opinion on them? For reference, this will be going on an El Cuervo with a 888.

go for the direct-mount... it's super low profile and i rode it for 2 years with no problems whatsoever (the 888 one)

as long as it's clamping onto the steerer, and not just bolted through the crown, i don't see why you'd have any more trouble than a normal stem

I have run a direct mount for 4 years with no problems......a lower mount helps with body positioning and helps keep your center gravity lower....better for DH.....I would do it
