    XTR performance on a budget...

Another newbie Zion rider here. Built mine up with nice locally built, custom wheels & some lightly used carbon bits from eBay. Went with a Surly KM fork since the Zion matching fork is no longer available. I'll post pics when I get it tidied up a bit.

Get a good set of brakes, wheels, tires and a saddle that fits your needs. You can cut corners on the other stuff. For the drivetrain, I save a bundle and still get excellent shifting by using XTR shift cables. The Deore, LX, XT, XTR components all work well if tuned properly. 8spd derailers play nicely with 9spd shifters and vise versa; just be sure that your cassette & shifters match. I mention this because used Shimano stuff, especially the non-XTR stuff, can be had really cheap sometimes. As long as it's not really thrashed, just tune it well and use a brand new set of $25 XTR cables & you're golden. Best upgrade around, especially if you have the stock cable set that comes with Deore shifters.

Good luck & have fun with the build.

Well I priced it out at Price Point and it comes to $1031.72

    Fork: On-One Superlight Steel fork - 123.98
    Brakes: 2007 Aivd BB7 - $100 + Levers - Speed Dial 7 2007 - $21.98
Cranks: Race Face Evolve XC - $119.98
Shifters: Combo Package with Rear Der. All X-9 (trigger shifters) - $129.98
    R/Derailleur: See Above
    Cassette: Sram PG 950 - $24.98
    F/Derailleur: Sram X-7 - $29.98
Stem: Race Face Deus - $34.98
Handlebar: Race Face Evolve XC - $19.98
Seatpost: Race Face Evolve XC - $ 35.98
    Saddle: WTB Shadow - $49.98
    Tires: WTB Exiwolfs (2.3) - $ 29.98 x 2 = $59.96
    Rims/wheels: Shimano XT hubs/ Mavic 719 Rims - $259.98
Headset: Race Face Dues - $49.98

I would also include the Stan's Package and don't forget Cables and a chain. This was just me sticking to PricePoint and keeping the budget also I was keeping a Race Face theme for you - you could definitely go chepaer with some parts and more expensive with others, but this will give you a good idea.
