    Wanting to replace the headset on my Forge Sawback 5XX 26'er. VP-A42E - alt?

    I've had my Forge Sawback 5XX 26'er back for almost a decade now, decided to upgrade its drivetrain components, brakes and the forks. I'm 6 foot and weigh around 200 lbs, would have made more sense to buy a new 29er bike but this one had some sentimental value - just XC trails from time to time. Wanted to convert it's 3x9 drivetrain to a 1x9..

    Purchased the following

    * AVID BB7 MTB Brakes
    * SRAM GX 1000 GXP X-Sync Crankset (175mmx32tooth)
    * SRAM / Truvativ Team GXP Bottom Bracket (68mm)
    * MicroShift ADVENT CS-H039A 9 Sp Cassette (11-42t)
    * MicroShift ADVENT SL-M8195-R Right Trigger Shifter (9 speed)
    * MicroShift ADVENT RD-M6195 Clutch Rear Derailleur
    * Crank Brothers Stamp 1 Pedals
    * Manitou Markhor 26 Inch Fork

    The only issue I'm running into is trying to find out the specifications for the current headset so I can replace it with something (it uses caged ball bearings). It has the following markings - VP-A42E AHEADSET (Mfg By VP for CANE CREEK). It's an integrated - 1-1/8 Inch Straight Through.

    Anybody have any tips on what I can swap this thing out with that's compatible with my current frame? (Can't find the ID specifications of the inner cups -> frame)..

    Here's what it looks like..

    Saw some old threads that the Cane Creek ZS-2 Zero Stack Headset should be compatible. And are made for Zero Stack Frames with 44.0mm head tube ID. But looking at it's pics - don't think it's much of an upgrade over the VP-A42E. Reading some more, looks like the FSA Orbit- Z 1-1/8" deep cup (#101-1300 or HD4647) be a suitable replacement and may actually be an upgrade? Or the FSA Orbit ZS44 Headset (#7170-15191 or HD4649) be the one I should grab (it says it's shallow cup)? I guess it depends on how the inner bore of the head tube is machined.

    Looking at Cane Creek's 40 series lineup - would the ZS44/28.6 for the upper, and the ZS44/30 for the lower be the right headset? part num (#BAA0075K).

    Couple of other notes - parts wise..

    • The Rear Derailleur hanger looks like it's made by GIANT - #RE78E type should fit.
    • The bottom bracket is a square taper - 68mmx113 (e.g. Shimano UN55)
