    Stem clamp bolt torque?

    Evening all,

After replacing my CaneCreek headset bearings, I want to torque the stem clamp bolts down correctly. The Intense stem has MAX 5 Nm on it. But when removing, it certainly felt like more than that. Its a 40mm fork steerer tube also. What are you guys torquing to?

    Thanks and stay healthy

    Sid

The stems I'm using has 6Nm printed on them. I go with that. That said, my GF's bike's stem listed 5Nm but I just had a habit of setting the torque wrench to 6Nm automatically. Nothing broke but maybe I just go lucky.

It is possible that Intense used a threadlocker on the bolts and why it felt harder to undo.

Go with what is on the stem. It is supposed to give way if you crash hard. Too tight, and something may break. And if it was really tight, good chance the shop that assembled it didn't use a torque wrench.

5 or 6 are usually what different stems call for on torque! go with what’s printed on yours or the install guide

I usually torque mine to 5nm. The number printed on the stem is the max torque. The torque number is there to protect the hardware and/or the part the hardware threads into. I've seen people break the heads off of stem bolts when tightening.

You guys are the S**T. I'd buy you all a biscuit if I didn't have to wait in the long ass line at the drive thru.

Stay healthy guys and thanks a ton again.
