Shimano 12-Speed Upgrade for Less $$

Forgive me if this issue is addressed elsewhere...

Like many of you, I wanted to upgrade to Shimano 12-speed but then found out you also need a need new 12-speed crank and microspline freehub. Not wanting do all that, I here's what I found that works...

    • Shimano 12-speed shifter and rear derailleur (I'm using XT but SLX should work too)
    • SRAM PG-1230 12-speed NX Eagle Cassette 11-50T (about $100 and it fits on your current 9/10/11 HG cassette body)
    • SRAM 12-speed chain (any model)
    • 11-speed cranks, Shimano or otherwise

I tried this on my Turner and it works flawlessly! Super smooth in every way and a quite a bit cheaper than new hubs and cranks. It's now going on my Santa Cruz. I suspect it's important to use the SRAM chain with the SRAM cassette, but I can't say I've tried other options.

    Excellent.

Do you think an 11 speed derailleur would work with the 12 speed shifter? If so, what about a med cage with the goat link over the 50T cog? Any guesses based on what you know now?

I suspect an 11-speed derailleur would work with a 12-speed shifter, but I've never tried this so can't say for sure. As for the Goat Link, the same goes, never tried it.

I would love to hear of other folks experience.

It would mean that people other people on 11 speed HG cassettes can follow your less $$ 12 speed upgrade plan with just a cassette, chain, goatlink, and shifter.

I used a sram X1 11 speed shifter with an eagle GX derailleur, and a 11-50 11 speed cassette and it worked great.
