Need new headset for 1997 trek - help with specs please.

    Hi all,

My girlfriends bike (1997 trek zx6000shx) had a little looseness in the front end which felt like it might be the headset. It has a 1 1/8" threadless, so I loosened the stem from the steerer tube and knocked the fork down to make sure it wasnt stuck. Pushed the fork up back into place and started tightening the plastic headset cap. I kept tightening slowly and couldnt get rid of the play, so I kept going. Lets just say this did not end well for the plastic head cap.

So I'm going to get a new headset, but I just wanted to confirm the specs. It appears to be an external headset with pressed cups. I found some specs from and old manual and it says the original headset was a Tange Seiki STE headset (25.4/34.0/30, 24.5mm stack).

I assume those specs mean 25.4mm steerer tube, 34mm headtube internal diameter, and 30mm crown race diameter? If so, this confuses me a little because the steerer is definitely 1 1/8".

So i am thinking any standard 1 1/8" external cup headset would work as long as it has 28.6mm/34mm/30mm? Any input/confirmation would be greatly appreciated.

Here are a couple photos of the original headset.

Sounds like you got it right. JensonUSA has several headsets that will work for you, depending on how much you want to spend. Here a just a couple examples...

IMHO, for the bike its going on, the FSA Orbit Equipe seems like a good deal.

Thanks BrianU! I was looking at the cane creek 10 and 40. I can get the 10 for $31 or the 40 for $36. My girlfriend rides maybe 10x a year and its mostly on pavement or smooth dirt/gravel trails, so i dont think theres any need for anything more expensive than the 10...and like you said, especially for the bike its going on.
