How to know what hub to buy?

What are the specs I need to know on my bike to determine what specific hub I am looking for?

Spacing, and axle size. If it is a few years old, likely 15mm x 100mm front, and 12mm x 142mm rear. Those would be thru axles, which thread in, vs quick release, where the axle and wheel exit the frame or fork together.

You look up the specs online or ask the manufacturer.
