    Winter Tire Recommendations

    Hey commuting maniacs.

I commute daily in Calgary Alberta. Almost 15 kms one way.

My winter commuter is a rigid 2008 Kona Fire Mountain mountain bike. I am running studded Schwalbe Marathon 1.75s.

Granted, they are about 2 seasons old and have been ridden quite a bit on pavement, but man, do they suck. I have to ride down a long steep hill with underground springs that wash sideways across the road in places. It's horrible on any tire, but I think I must be able to do better than the Marthons that are on there.

In melting snow with a crumbly base and ruts, the skinniness of the tires seem to contribute to a feeling that I may die at any moment.

Anyone have any recommendation for a tire to best deal with downhill ice, and soft heavy accumulations of snow?

For downhill ice I would recommend spiketires, for soft heavy snow a fatbike.

Maybe someone will invent a fat spiketire for you?

I know I have seen strap on spikes for a bike tire, maybe that is something for you?

I did a quick search and didnt find what I was looking for, but I did find this:

    CU, CD

For icy crap, it's hard to beat the Schwalbe studded tires. I have a set of extra rims so I can swap as needed.

They do take more power so when it's bad, i put one on the front. When it's really bad, I run both.
